ACO Press release

Statement: Inaccuracies – The Tablet

October 1, 2026

On 25 September, The Tablet published an article about meetings between the Secretary General of the Anglican Communion, the Rt Revd Anthony Poggo and the Secretary General of GAFCON, the Rt Revd Paul Donison.

It stated:  ‘Gafcon’s secretary general Bishop Paul Donison has reportedly continued to meet Bishop Anthony Poggo, secretary general of the Anglican Communion, including at a meeting in August’

However, meetings suggested by The Tablet did not take place.

Dialogue that seeks to build understanding and foster Christian unity is always important in the work of the Anglican Communion Office, as the official Secretariat to the Anglican Communion.

In his role as Secretary General, Bishop Anthony Poggo does correspond with a variety of Anglican Member churches and other Anglican groups around the world, which at times has included representatives of GAFCON.

In addition, the Anglican Communion Office has corresponded with GAFCON representatives over work on Anglican identity and communion structures, that was commissioned by the Anglican Consultative Council (for example through IASCUFO’s work on the Nairobi-Cairo Proposals).

The Anglican Communion Office has contacted The Tablet to log the inaccuracy of the report.
