Connecting a Global Family: A Ministry of Unity and Service
The Secretary General leads the staff of the Anglican Communion Office, as the official secretariat to the Angclian Communion.
He oversees the ACO’s role of supporting the Instruments of Communion, which are the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Anglican Consultative Council, the Lambeth Conference and the Primates’ Meeting.
A former Diocesan bishop, he liaises with the Member Churches of the Anglican Communion and guides the ACO in supporting Anglican Commissions and Networks.
He is also an ambassador for the Anglican Communion in various ecumenical and advocacy forums.

Meet the Secretary General
The Rt Revd Anthony Poggo was appointed Secretary General of the Anglican Communion on 1 September 2022. In this role, he provides strategic leadership to the Anglican Communion Office and serves as a global ambassador for the Communion’s 42 autonomous yet inter-dependent Member Churches.
Prior to his appointment, he served at Lambeth Palace as the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Adviser on Anglican Communion Affairs from 2016-2022.
Born in Kajo-Keji in South Sudan, Bishop Anthony’s family fled to Uganda during the first Sudanese Civil War, an experience that gives him a profound understanding of the challenges facing many Anglicans today.
Ordained a priest in 1996, his ministry has included serving as Bishop of Kajo-Keji in his native South Sudan from 2007 to 2016, serving Scripture Union and as Executive Director for the Christian mission agency ‘Across’. His roles have involved serving Sudanese refugees in exile.
He holds a degree in Management and Public Administration from the University of Juba, an MA in Biblical Studies from Nairobi International School of Theology and an MBA in publishing from Oxford Brookes University.
He has authored a number of publications: ‘Come Let Us Rebuild: Lessons on Nehemiah’ and ‘Tithing: A Biblical investigation and evaluation’ as well as contributed to forewords, afterwords or chapters to other publications.
A Global Communion
Member Churches: Visits of Solidarity and Support
The Secretary General regularly travels to the various member churches of the Anglican Communion.
Whether it’s time in prayer and fellowship, learning more about the local mission of the church, or standing in solidarity on matters of justice and advocacy, the Secretary General’s international visits are an important part of his ministry.
Global Ambassador
As a global ambassador, The Secretary General represents the Communion to governments and wider society. He amplifies Anglican voices in dialogues, promotes the priorities of peace and reconciliation and supports the mission and evangelism of local churches.
Listening and Support
Visits to Member Churches are times for pastoral engagement, listening and support. The Secretary General prays with churches in crisis, encourages vital local ministries and promotes the work of Anglican Commissions and Networks around the world.
