Inter-Anglican Standing Commission on Unity, Faith and Order (IASCUFO)

Serving the 42 member churches of the Anglican Communion, IASCUFO supports the theological life of the global Anglican family. It is a permanent commission and its mandate is threefold: to deepen the bonds between Anglican churches; to advise the Instruments of Communion and member churches on doctrine and church structure; and to ensure our ecumenical agreements remain faithful to our Anglican inheritance.

A GLOBAL COMMISSION

Comprising bishops, clergy, and theologians from Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.

exploring The Future Structure of the Communion

In 2023, IASCUFO was commissioned by the Anglican Consultative Council to explore ways to foster Christian unity and help “to address our differences in the Anglican Communion”. This work has resulted in The Nairobi-Cairo Proposals published in Advent 2024 and a Supplement Paper published in Lent 2026. The proposals will be discussed at the Anglican Consultative Council in 2026.

Sustaining Common Life

IASCUFO stewards the essential theological bonds—in prayer, law, and agreement—that help our member churches walk together as one Communion.

Ecumenical Reception

IASCUFO guides the process by which ecumenical agreements are received into the life of the Communion. When a bilateral commission (like ARCIC) produces an agreed statement, IASCUFO evaluates its consistency with Anglican faith and produces resources to assist Provinces in their own study and decision-making.

Liturgy & Common Prayer

IASCUFO oversees the International Anglican Liturgical Consultation (IALC), promoting common themes in worship while respecting local culture. From eucharistic prayers to the calendar of saints, the commission ensures that while languages differ, the shape of prayer remains recognisably Anglican.

Canon Law & Doctrine

Working with the Network of Legal Advisers, IASCUFO identifies the shared principles of Canon Law common to Anglican churches. The Commission also produces theological teaching documents, such as God So Loved the World, to help Anglicans think about issues like salvation and what it means to be human.

Theological Papers

Explore the major theological study guides and reports produced by the commission to help the Anglican Communion navigate complex questions of faith. These authoritative publications resource church leaders and scholars, offering a curated framework for understanding pressing doctrinal and ethical challenges of our time.

Communiqués and STATEMENTS

Access official statements and communiqués from the commission’s annual meetings to track the progress of its work year by year. These collected resources provide a transparent, chronological record of theological dialogue and official positions for those seeking a deeper understanding of the “mind of the Communion” on key matters.

IASCUFO’s membership reflects the diversity of the Anglican Communion. Theologians, bishops, and clergy serving on the commission are from Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.
