Press Release Pope Francis and the Archbishop of Canterbury to commission bishops in support of ecumenical summit 'Growing Together' During the week, Pope Francis and the Archbishop of Canterbury will commission Catholic and Anglican bishops for joint mission, as part of the ecumenical dialogue summit "Growing Together" run by IARCCUM. The programme includes the following:

Thursday, January 25 Morning The Archbishop of Canterbury will preside and preach at Anglican Eucharist at San Bartolomeo All’Isola on Tiber Island (Sanctuary of the New Martyrs).

For other time zones, use a time zone converter here Afternoon Pope Francis and the Archbishop of Canterbury will commission Catholic and Anglican bishop pairs taking part in the ecumenical summit “Growing Together”. They will send the bishops out for joint mission and witness. The commissioning will take part during Vespers near the

tomb of the Apostle Paul (Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls).

This will be a significant moment, symbolic for Anglican-Catholic bonds and advancing ecumenical dialogue. It will be the second time that the Pope and the Archbishop of Canterbury have commissioned Anglican and Catholic bishop pairs since 2016 (which happened in the context of the first IARCCUM summit).

Friday, January 26 A pilgrimage visit to the church of San Gregorio al Celio, from where the first Archbishop of Canterbury was sent to England by Pope Gregory the Great in 597. The bishops of “Growing Together” will meet for prayer at the site.

IARCCUM aims to foster closer co-operation between the Anglican and Roman Catholic traditions and put into practice progress made in theological conversations. It works through pairs of bishops in particular countries, one Anglican and one Roman Catholic, meeting together and promoting shared mission. It was established in 2000, by Archbishop George Carey and Cardinal Edward Cassidy, the then President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity.

IARCCUM’s work is co-chaired by Bishop David Hamid, Suffragan Bishop of the Diocese in Europe, and Archbishop Donald Bolen, the Catholic Archbishop of Regina, Saskatchewan. It is supported by the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity in Rome and the Anglican Communion Office, Secretariat to the Anglican Communion.
