Gender Justice

"So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." - Genesis 1.27

Group Shot At Table 2 - CopyIn the Anglican Communion we are committed to ensuring that our churches become a living witness to our belief that women and men are equally made in the image of God.

Within the Communion and beyond, we recognise that the empowerment of women and men to live and work in just relationship requires a transformation among individuals and in all our communities.

There are about 43 million women in the world-wide Communion with a vast diversity of experience and gifts. This section of the Anglican Communion website serves to tell their stories, share their experience and celebrate their achievements.

God's Justice: Theology and Gender Justice

God’s Justice: Theology and Gender based Violence can help churches and members everywhere live together in mutually loving relationships free of violence and abuse, as Jesus Christ had taught. Written by scholars, clergy, and laity from different parts of the Anglican Communion, the purpose of God’s Justice is to show how the Bible and Christian teachings can support just, loving, and mutually respectful relationships, and to offer ways that churches can--and should--respond to gender-based injustice, abuse, and violence. God’s Justice is rooted in Resolution 16.02, passed by the Anglican Consultative Council in 2016, which encourages all provinces to help girls and boys, women and men, to participate in relationships “that reflect Christian values of love, dignity, and justice.

The 16 Days of Activism

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an international campaign which takes place each year between 25 November (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) and 10 December (Human Rights Day). The campaign is a good opportunity to speak out about domestic abuse, early and forced marriage, female genital mutilation and the many other forms of violence against women and girls.

The Anglican Communion’s Director for Gender Justice, Mandy Marshall, wants to hear from your province and diocese about any plans you have to mark the 16 Days and how you will raise awareness during this time. These will be shared across our social media platforms. Please send details by email to [email protected].

Women and Men working together for Gender Justice

This means:

  • promoting the full inclusion of women’s gifts, voices and concerns in the structures and decision-making processes of the Anglican Communion, its member churches and other bodies
  • theological reflection on such issues as the use of power; empowerment as the work of love; ‘agency’ - the ability to act for oneself; just relationship; and metanoia – that arrival at repentance and turning away from old ways and harmful attitudes
  • participation in wider conversations with respect to gender justice, and sharing information and insights – for example with ecumenical and non-governmental partners, with governments and with the programmes, commissions and councils of the United Nations.
