UN NGO News: The Spirit of the United Nations: Markings for the Future

A very beautiful and touching event took place on October 27, 2005 for the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of the United Nations and the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Dag Hammarskjold, second Secretary-General of the United Nations. The Values Caucus and NGO Committee on Spirituality, Values and Global Concerns were the main organizers among others. MMS was one of the numerous supporting organizations for this event.

The Conference room was decorated with balloons, balloons were tied to each desk and it gave a very festive look. The event was marked with presentations on UN, silent moments, indigenous dance, a colorful video presentation, culminating with the presentation of a beautiful birthday cake. Each of the participants was given blank cards and was asked to write a moment of being at the UN, which brought a positive change in the world. For the next page each one was asked to write how they thought the UN of the future can improve the quality of life on our planet. The responses are now on display in the UN building.

It was a coming together to remember the birth of the United Nations and the hopes that the founders of the UN and its proponents including, Dag Hammarskjold, had for the United Nations decades ago. The event was filled with many quotes from “Markings” by Dag Hammarskjold. The NGOs through this event showed the dedication they have for the working and moving forward the objectives of the UN. Sisters Pat Edelen and Philo Morris along with 3 staff from Fox Chase attended this event.
