[L'Eglise Episcopal au Rwanda - Rwanda] The President of Hope International, Peter Greer, has pledged partnership with the government and local churches to promote micro-finance schemes as one of his church's initial support for Rwanda.

Greer, who arrived in Rwanda May 21 for a one-week partnership projects assessment programme, said this during a press briefing on May 22 immediately after an impromptu meeting with the Anglican Church leaders.

He said that the partnership will aim at boosting poverty reduction projects by increasing people's incomes and savings.

"Hope International is to work with the Rwandan government and churches in areas of micro-finance. I believe that once this mission is executed, poverty will reduce," he said. The charity organisation has been helping Rwandans to reduce poverty through Urwego Community Banking formed in 1997.

"I have agreed to partner with churches in areas of micro-finance with an intention to reduce poverty. Part of my tour is to meet with government officials and discuss how to widen micro-finance projects across the country."

He further said: "Part of my mission is to see how Urwego Community Banking project could continue operating."

On his part, the Managing Director of Urwego Community Banking, Scott Bellows, said that the scheme has helped the people especially in rural areas to fight against poverty through forming associations.

"We has extended loans to 19,000 Rwandans and renovated many houses in Rwamagana District. The scheme also mobilises and sensitises people on HIV/Aids and the Biblical norms," he pointed out.

Hope International is a charity organisation which supports micro-finance projects in developing countries. Currently the organisation operates in twelve countries.
