Church Donates 1500 Goats for Community Upliftment - Bishop Rwaje

[L'Eglise Episcopal au Rwanda - Rwanda] The Rt Revd Onesphore Rwaje, Dean of the Province of the Anglican Church of Rwanda and Bishop of Byumba Diocese, reports that the church has offered over one thousand goats to the local people in the Diocese of Byumba, in the northern part of Rwanda.

The bishop said this on Tuesday 28 August, while addressing a press conference in the Rwandan capital Kigali. He said the action was taken a couple of months ago in an attempt to bail the community out of poverty.

He added that the church had not only offered goats but also two hundred exotic cows for the purpose of milk production. Both the cows and the goats could form the basis of income-generating businesses. "Our church has a vision for holistic development," the bishop said, adding that the church was working round the clock to improve the welfare of the population.

Bishop Rwaje said the church had also helped the population to ensure food security by providing them with agricultural supplies and food to help them stamp out hunger in the community. The Anglican Diocese of Byumba had equipped the community of Gicumbi district with modern knowledge to help them improve their agricultural farming.

He noted the church had put in place socio-therapy programs to help with the healing and reconciliation, as well as HIV-Aids programs to stem the tide of this pandemic in the region. The 1994 genocide left many Rwandans traumatised and infected with HIV-Aids as a result of rape.

The prelate urged other religious groups in the region to champion the cause of fighting poverty and HIV-Aids for the good of the community. The Anglican Church of Rwanda has been at the forefront of evangelisation, peace-building, poverty reduction and fighting HIV- Aids across Great Lakes region.
