Archbishop Vunagi called on Selwyn to revive its image
August 11, 2009

[Melanesian Messenger - Melanesia] Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Melanesia the Most Rev David Vunagi called on staff and students of Selwyn College to revive the good image the institution was once proud of.

He said this during his inaugural visit to the College on west Guadalcanal last Sunday.

In separate meetings he called for both staff and students he said he is sad to note that the good image of the school has deteriorated especially in its spiritual and moral discipline.

Speaking to the students the Archbishop said Selwyn College was founded on three principles of True Religion, Sound Learning and Useful Industry.

As such, they need to be faithful and strong in their prayer life, they must strive for academic excellence and to also actively engage in extra curricular activities of the College.

He urged students to use their time well at the College as they are the fortunate ones who have been given the opportunity that a lot of other young people have not had the chance to get.

Archbishop Vunagi encouraged the College staff to put on extra effort in rebuilding and reshaping the life of the school in order to revive the good image and spirit of the College.

As a former principal of the College for many years he shared his experiences and encouraged teachers to be good role models for their students and exercise their roles and responsibilities diligently.

The Archbishop said while teachers must be firm when it comes to discipline, he also cautioned them to be fair and just in how they apply the rules.

Staff and students thanked the Archbishop for his visit and especially for his words of advice and pledge to uphold them in order to restore the good life the College once thrived on.

The Archbishops visit to the College also coincides with the annual commemoration and celebration of the Colleges Patron Saint ‘Transfiguration of Our Lord’.

Staff, students, parents and guardians, former students, staff and students from Bishop Patteson Theological College, friends and supporters of the Selwyn in marking the inaugural visit of the Archbishop and the Saints Day enjoyed a time of feasting, dancing and singing.

Selwyn College is the Anglican Church of Melanesia premier school. It currently enrolls about 600 students from Forms 1 to 7
