Selwyn Commemorates Patronal Saint Day
August 10, 2009

[Melanesian Messenger - Melanesia] Hundreds of parents, guardians, former students, friends and supporters of Selwyn College joined staff and students to commemorate its annual Patronal Saint ‘Transfiguration of Our Lord’ last Sunday.

Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Melanesia the Most Rev David Vunagi was the guest of honor at the celebration which also coincides with his inaugural visit to the College after becoming the Church’s Primate two months ago.

He celebrated the Holy Eucharist Service as well as gave the sermon based on the Transfiguration story.

The Transfiguration of Jesus Christ was a unique display of His divine character and a glimpse of the glory, which Jesus had before He came to earth in human form. And His coming as the Son of God was to gift mankind with the greatest gift ever given; eternal life.

He said because of this great revelation everyone needs to boldly hold on to their faith and affirm it in Him alone.

The Archbishop later called separate meetings for staff and students in which he shared his heart about the future of the institution.

He said he was distressed to note that there is a general decline in the spiritual and moral aspect of the life of the school which also contributes to its poor physical state.

Archbishop Vunagi encouraged and motivated them with his personal experiences as a former teacher and principal of Selwyn to bring back the spirit that makes it one of the best schools in the country.

The schools annual liturgical event was also marked with feasting, dancing and singing by students including former students.

Selwyn College is the Anglican Church of Melanesia premier school. It currently enrolls about 600 students from Forms 1 to 7
