PMU GENERAL MEETING MOVED TO 2009

MELANESIAN MESSENGER 080812-4
August 12, 2008

[Melanesian Messenger - Melanesia] The Church of Melanesia Provincial Mothers Union (PMU) General Meeting scheduled for September this year in Vanuatu has now been postponed to early next year.

An executive meeting of the Mothers Union last week in Honiara, Solomon Islands has resolved to move the meeting to March 2009 due largely to pressing financial and logistical issues.

There is also a clash in timing since the two Dioceses; Vanuatu and Banks and Torres will at around the same time have their Diocesan Synods.

With the deferment of the event the executive is hoping to buy more time for all dioceses to prepare well for the meeting in six months time.

The executive said to host the meeting the Mothers Union needs about SBD$600,000. (49,000vatu) to meet travel, food and accommodation costs.

The PMU office today issued a letter to all Diocesan Mothers Union Presidents urging them to put extra efforts into their fundraising initiatives in order to raise enough money to allow their members to attend.

From the total budgetary requirements each diocese is strongly asked to contribute about ten percent of the total cost.

If however, contributions are not forthcoming by December this year the executive has alternatively suggested the meeting to be moved to the Solomon Islands in order to cut back on the costs.

About two-thirds of the total delegates to the General meeting is from the Solomon Islands.

The meeting held every three years is the biggest gathering of the Provincial Mothers Union in the Church of Melanesia to discuss major issues pertaining to their work.

The meeting next year will be co-hosted by the Diocese of Vanuatu and the Diocese of Banks and Torres and is to be held at Sarakata Parish in Luganville on Santo in the Diocese of Vanuatu.

The last PMU General Meeting was held at Polomuhu village in the Diocese of Central Solomons in the Solomon Islands in 2005.
