DOT revised Canon approved by Synod
May 5, 2008

[Melanesian Messenger - Melanesia] The Diocese of Temotu has approved at its 16th Diocesan Synod the new revised Diocesan Canon.

The Canon which is an instrument or law guiding the work of the Diocese was reviewed following a decision by the Diocesan Council in 2006.

The Council felt that the old Canon formulated in 1998 no longer caters for the new and emerging changes affecting the Diocese therefore needs to be re-looked at.
A 5-member review team chaired by Fr. John Ini Lapli carried out the task since 2006 and last year produced a draft document that was brought to the recent Synod for final scrutiny and approval.

In the revised document, a number of Canons have been amalgamated resulting in the reduction of the Canons from 19 to 17. This was due largely to some provisions being duplicated and where it is felt that they overlapped with other Canons.

Format of the Canon has also undergone changes to give audience clear directions, guides and easy access and understanding of the document.

The present Canon also includes newly introduced ministries of the Diocese that have not been Canonised because it was not catered for under the old Canon.

The Canon is now being used by the Diocese following its approval at the recent Synod.
