Vura and Sola Parishes Sign MOU

MELANESIAN MESSENGER 071212-1
December 12, 2007

[Melanesian Messenger - Melanesia] Vura parish of the Diocese of Central Melanesia in Solomon Islands has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Sola parish of Banks and Torres in Vanuatu, paving a way for the two parishes to establish a sister relationship.

The document was signed in Honiara on Monday this week by the Chairman and the Rector of each parish and witnessed by the congregation of Vura and a youth delegation representing Sola parish.

Vura parish chairman Mr Ambrose Bugotu said the signing ceremony was a manifestation of a new beginning of an old relationship once held by Solomon Islands and Banks and Torres, and in particular Mota, where the Anglican mission work in Melanesia started.

Since the Anglican Church in Solomon Islands was the fruit of the work that came through Banks and Torres, he said this relationship was about carrying on that historical journey together, building on the foundation of love and care for each other.

Mr Bugotu said it reaffirmed and strengthened their efforts to work together with a sense of compassion and to build confidence for the way forward.

The Bishop of the Diocese of Banks and Torres, the Right Reverend Nathan Tome, pointed out three important aspects of this relationship: mission, a witness for the Church and a relationship to talk about God.

He said these were the basis that would enable the partners to work and share together in their different ministries with the parishes.
