DOT to Kick-start Groundwork for New Secondary School

MELANESIAN MESSENGER 071130-2
November 30, 2007

[Melanesian Messenger - Melanesia] The groundwork for the establishment of a secondary school for the Diocese of Temotu of the Church of Melanesia in Solomon Islands is expected to start next year.

Following a preliminary site inspection in October this year, personnel from the Church Provincial Office in Honiara and the Diocese have agreed to carry out the work on clearing the site by early 2008.

The site, covering an area of 60 hectares, was re-surveyed in May this year. The property is registered to the Church of Melanesia and is adjacent to the Makio Household of the Melanesian Brotherhood and the Luesalo Training Centre at Graciosa Bay on Santa Cruz Island.

Both parties are satisfied with the result of their inspection and assessment. With its large area of fertile land for agricultural activities and a reliable water source, the site is well suited for the establishment of a school.

The next phase of the project is the planning of the site and the design of the school itself, with construction work scheduled to start in 2009. The first intake of students is expected the following year.

The Church of Melanesia, in its education policy, has encouraged all dioceses both in Solomon Islands and Vanuatu to acquire or establish and run their own secondary schools.
