Care and Healing Programme for Children on its Way

MELANESIAN MESSENGER 070831-2
August 31, 2007

[Melanesian Messenger - Melanesia] The Christian Care Centre of the Church of Melanesia in Solomon Islands is preparing to implement a new programme soon: a children's educational component to its care and healing programme.

Sister Doreen Awaiasi, who is coordinating the activities of the Care Centre, said a Child Development Centre was being built to house this new undertaking. It would include an indoor classroom for teaching as well as an outdoor recreational park.

"The indoor programme is aimed at developing and nurturing the children socially, mentally and spiritually through teaching that will take the form of play therapy using puppets, pictures, skits and other participatory forms of learning," she said.

The recreational playground, on the other hand, will offer another setting for children to be together to interact and socialise with one another freely and openly.

She said this would help to build a community of children and young people with different backgrounds who would be nurtured and motivated to respect each other and would learn the value of togetherness with their friends and other children.

"Children need proper guidance in order to build and cement the character we want to see in them when they grow up. They have seen and experienced the infamy of mental and physical abuse, therefore will need a lot of assistance in a lot of different ways," she said.

With the programme now in place, these issues can at last be addressed seriously. The Christian Care Centre is thankful to the European Union for providing funds for the Child Development Centre, which is expected to complete by October this year.
