New ICP programme prepares prisoners for release

MELANESIAN MESSENGER 070430-1
April 30, 2007

[Melanesian Messenger - Melanesia] The Inclusive Communities Programme (ICP) of the Anglican Church of Melanesia, in partnership with other local stakeholders, this month launched a pre-release programme to prepare inmates of Tetere Prison on East Guadalcanal to integrate into their communities when they are released.

This pilot programme, coordinated by the Programmes and Industry Unit of the Solomon Islands Prison Service, is using local service providers like ICP and other church groups and organizations within Honiara to run different programmes aimed at assisting inmates psychologically.

ICP is focusing mainly on addressing individual problem issues such as self-esteem, anger management, domestic violence and abuse as well as life skills, along with other issues considered necessary for the inmates.

Four inmates who are currently on the programme are expecting to be released by July and August this year. They will be visited once a week by personnel from ICP in Honiara.

The inmates are very grateful to ICP for this wonderful programme that is equipping them to look at themselves in a new way when they are released back to their communities.

ICP ran similar programmes for inmates at the Rove Maximum Prison in Honiara in 2005 and 2006. At that time, the programmes were focused on motivating and encouraging the inmates while they were serving their time; now the focus is on preparation for release.
