MELANESIAN MESSENGER 070406-4
April 6, 2007

[Melanesian Messenger - Melanesia] The Anglican Church of Melanesia in Solomon Islands has pledged to provide relief assistance to the tsunami stricken areas in the Western and Choiseul provinces.

This assistance will be in the form of basic food items as well materials to assist the victims in rebuilding their lives.

Some overseas mission partners have also indicated their willingness to support the Church’s relief programme.

Meanwhile the Church has expressed profound sympathy and deepest condolences to survivors of the recent earthquake and tsunami that devastated the Western region.

The Church called on the good Christian people to pray and give moral support to the families of those who were killed injured or made homeless following the tragic disaster.

The tsunami that resulted from an underwater quake with a magnitude of 8 on the Richter scale outside of Gizo slammed the coastline of the islands on its path causing havoc and chaotic scenes.

More than thirty deaths have so far been reported with hundreds injured and thousands more left homeless.
