Archbishop's term of office extended

MELANESIAN MESSENGER 070406-2
April 6, 2007

[Melanesian Messenger - Melanesia] Archbishop of the Church of Melanesia the Most Reverend Sir Ellison Pogo?s term as the Episcopal head of the Anglican Church in Solomon Islands and Vanuatu has been extended for another year.

The Church of Melanesia Executive Council in its meeting in November last year agreed to extend the Archbishop's term until December 2008 despite reaching retirement age this year.

The Executive Council in November of 2005 first discussed the matter following a request by the Anglican Communion Office in London to extend Sir Pogo?s term as Archbishop and Bishop of Central Melanesia.

The Anglican Communion's request came as it prepares for the Lambeth Conference in England next year.

Lambeth Conference is a meeting of Anglican Communion Primates held every ten years.

Archbishop Pogo is a Chairman of the Lambeth Design Group responsible for drawing up of the agenda and programmes of the meeting.
