Diocese Bridged by Tele-Radio Facility

MELANESIAN MESSENGER 070111-1
January 11, 2007

[Melanesian Messenger - Melanesia] The Diocese of Banks and Torres in Vanuatu is now digitally bridged with the setting up of new communication facilities on four of its main islands.

Diocesan Bishop the Reverend Nathan Tome said the installation of four tele-radios was part of the physical development of the diocese under its 2006 Communication Project.

He said the project is an important one undertaken to ease one of the major problems facing the diocese whose islands are so scattered and weather conditions can be a challenge in getting to them.

The facility which includes a radio, batteries and cabling accessories, were installed at Lokon on the southern region of Gaua, Merelava, Vanua Lava and at Mering Island.

On Mering people were completely taken by surprise upon installation of the tele-radios as they can now make radio contact beyond their island for the first time since they set foot and settled there.

Bishop Tome said this is a significant step to not only enhancing communication in the diocese but will certainly improve their lives, now that they can utilise it for other development purposes.

He urged the communities he presented the equipment to, to look after them properly so that they can last and also serve the purpose for which they have been given.

The equipment were presented by Bishop Tome himself during his episcopal tour around the diocese late last year.

They were paid for by the Church of Melanesia.
