DOV committed to strengthen training of clergy and laity

MELANESIAN MESSENGER 070110-3
January 10, 2007

[Melanesian Messenger - Melanesia] Head of the Anglican church in the Diocese of Vanuatu Bishop James Marvin Ligo said his diocese will embark on putting together a comprehensive training programme for both diocesian clergy and laity.

The new Bishop said his Diocese currently does not have a human resource development plan.

He said they are far behind their sister dioceses in Solomon Islands in terms of qualified clergy and laity church employees.

It is because of this that he will ensure that a plan is in place as part of the development of the church.
Under this programme young potential clergy and laity workers will be encouraged to take up studies for higher qualification.

He said he is happy to note that under the Church’s Strategic Plan scholarships are to be offered to both clergy and laity church workers.

Bishop Ligo said as part of this programme one of his laity workers will be taking up university studies this year while two teachers have been admitted at the Vanuatu Institute of Teacher Education where they undergo a full time teacher training last year.

He adds, his diocese will reaffirm its interest to work side by side with the provincial and national government in addressing issues relating to education, health and social problems especially with youth, human resource development and economic life of each individual community in the parishes within the Diocese.
