[Diocese of Mauritius - Indian Ocean] The DYC (Diocesan Youth Committee) organized two prison visits during the month of September, one at the men’s prison in Richelieu on Saturday 10 and one at the women’s ward of the main prison in Beau Bassin on Saturday 24.
At the men’s prison in Richelieu there are approximately one hundred and thirty inmates while at the women’s ward of the main prison in Beau Bassin there are seventy. Among those women, twenty eight are from African countries.
These visits were under the responsibility of Rev James Seerungum, who is the prison’s chaplain and the DYC coordinator. More than fifteen members of the DYC attended this activity.
While the Worship Band led the music and songs, Rev James Seerungum delivered the messages. According to the youth they received a very warm welcome during these visits. Kevin David, the Youth Coordinator declared ‘the youth were blessed by the response of the inmates.’
These visits were in fact moments of intense emotion and blessings. One of the inmates at the women’s prison declared, while sharing her testimony ‘it is really moving when you receive visits from young people. Even though we are behind bars, our faith and soul are free to receive the loving kindness of GOD.’
At the end of these visits, the prison’s authority asked the DYC to renew the experience.
