[Diocese of Mauritius - Indian Ocean] The Revd Dr Oliver Simon, director of studies in the diocese of Mauritius, was asked to lead a retreat workshop for clergy of the diocese of Antsiranana 18 - 21 July. The workshop was held in Sambava, a town on the north eastern coast of Madagascar. Almost all the clergy were able to attend, some travelling for three days to get there. The theme of the retreat was "Jesus who accompanies us" the promise found at the end of St Matthew's Gospel. Each morning there were studies in one of the three synoptic gospels followed by group work - 'imaginers', 'thinkers', 'practitioners' and 'presenters'. On the afternoons of Tuesday and Wednesday we focused on the Church, "Why the Church?" and "My place in the Church" - a consideration of the pivotal role played by the clergy in the life of the church and the importance of refreshing our sense of vocation. Sessions were delivered in French and translated into Malagasy.
Following the retreat the first meeting of the Diocesan Standing Committee took place chaired by the Bishop of Antananarivo who is the Episcopal visitor to the diocese which is currently awaiting the nomination of a new bishop by the Provincial House of Bishops.
