[EAB Press - Burundi] DEVELOPMENTS IN THE PROVINCE

At an extra-ordinary Provincial Synod held in March the creation of Rumonge diocese from the southern part of Bujumbura diocese was approved making a seventh diocese.

The Rev. Pedaculi Birakengana who is currently the Provincial Secretary has been elected as the Bishop of the new diocese.

The Rt. Rev. Eraste Bigirimana who has been the Bishop of Muyinga has been appointed as Bishop of Bujumbura.

MOTHERS UNION TRAINING IN DR CONGO

Claudette Kigeme and Claudette Niyonizigiye from MU Burundi and Naomi Herbert and Johanna Fadipe from Mary Sumner House assisted in literacy training for the Mothers’ Union in the Province of the DR Congo in April.

Meeting in Kinshasa eleven MU diocesan coordinators, the Provincial Coordinator and MU President received training that drew from the experience of the programme in Burundi.

It is hoped that those trained will each train twelve facilitators who will start the literacy programme at local level.

MOTHERS UNION CHALLENGING GENDER RELATED VIOLENCE

In May pastors in Matana diocese met to consider the role of the Church and its leaders in particular in combating sexual and gender related violence.

Supported by Tearfund this continued a process begun at a Church leaders’ conference held in 2011 based on the theme “Silent No More”.

FAREWELL

The Province will say farewell to Rosemary Cottingham at the beginning of June when she leaves Burundi to begin her retirement in the UK.

Rosemary arrived in Burundi in July 2001 at the invitation of the late Archbishop Samuel Ndayisenga to establish communication in the Province and help to research some of the history of the Anglican Church in Burundi from its beginnings in 1935.

The Province is grateful to Rosemary for all she has done to develop communication and partnership links and wishes her God’s blessings for the future.

NEWS IN BRIEF

- Mathias Nkurunziza represented the Province at a training event on human rights, gender and HIV/AIDS organised by the Canadian Churches in Action. Participants from the dioceses of Bujumbura, Gitega and Buye also attended along with Anglicans from DR Congo and Rwanda.

- At the end of April the Director, Rev. Martin Auch and Deputy Director, Rev. Martin Kocher of Liebenzell Mission International made a visit to their mission partners working with Bujumbura diocese. They also visited the Province in order to look at ways of strengthening support especially in the area of theological training

- Some help has been given to a small group of those affected by the fire that destroyed the central market in Bujumbura in January. The Province is grateful for donations received that enabled the group to make a new start. They are now selling such items as oil, mayonnaise, blankets, children’s clothes and fabric in various markets areas of the city.
