[EAB Press - Burundi] MATTERS OF ADVOCACY
In November Her Excellency the First Lady of the Republic of Burundi opened a conference on “Capacity Building and the Development of Women”. The conference considered the social, demographical and economic challenges facing women’s capacity and sustainable development, drawing on experiences from S. Africa. Particular attention was given to the role of women in the family, the impact of poverty and to family planning.
Claudette Kigeme, coordinator of Mothers’ Union, represented the Province at the conference.
25TH November, International day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, marked the start of 16 days of activism against gender related violence. The Province engaged with national events and supported activities held throughout the dioceses.
HIV/AIDS NETWORKS
The Province is coordinating, with funding from Solidarité Protestante, the establishment of HIV/AIDS inter-confessional networks covering an initial 10 of Burundi’s 17 administrative provinces in order to provide a more coordinated approach to HIV and AIDS.
Leaders in the community are receiving training in counselling so that they can more effectively respond to the specific issues they face and provide help and support to those infected and affected by HIV and AIDS.
The networks promote the SAVE approach to HIV, provide information on such things as prevention, and engage in the work of advocacy within their communities.
RECENT VISITORS
The Province has been pleased to welcome Flame International, Lucy Muguiyi Ochieng and James Kweyu from CMS Africa, Rev. Canon Benjamin Musoke – Lubega from Trinity Church Grants programme accompanied by Petra Najjuka from Direction Wave, and Peter Sanders from The Kepplewray Project.
ENVIRONMENT WEEK
From the 12th December the Province will be involved in an environment week culminating in the celebration of National Tree Day. Approximately 30,000 trees will be planted in Muyinga diocese.
