On 19th December 2010 Bujumbura diocese’s new Cathedral Church of Holy Trinity was officially inaugurated in the presence of His Excellence Peter Nkurunziza, President of Burundi, and other dignitaries. The service was attended by the Archbishop and Bishops of the Province of the Anglican Church of Burundi as well as Bishops from Rwanda and Kenya.

The Anglican Archbishop of Tanzania, the Most Rev. Valentine Mokiwa, who preached, reminded the congregation that the building should be a place of refuge, blessing, and transformation for those who gather there.

The Bishop of Bujumbura, the Rt. Rev. Pie Ntukamazina, thanked all those who had been involved in the planning, building, and financing of the Cathedral over the 10 year period of construction.

In conjunction with the local administration approximately 10,000 mosquito nets were distributed in Buye diocese at the end of December 2010. This followed activities to raise awareness among people about malaria, the importance of protection, and the appropriate use of nets.

The Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Sixbert Macumi, thanked Netsforlife and Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) for their support.

The Province welcomed Dame Anne Owers, chair of the Board of Trustees of Christian Aid, and Paul Valentin, its International Director, when they visited Burundi in December. As part of the national Environment Week they joined the Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Martin Nyaboho, and staff of Makamba diocese along with the Provincial staff and local administration, at Mugumure Primary school, Nyanza Lac, to help the teachers and pupils plant trees.

At the beginning of January 3,700 trees were distributed to the community at Butambara, Rutana Province, in the diocese of Matana, for planting. The Archbishop and staff of the diocese were joined by the Provincial staff and the Bishop and staff from Makamba diocese. The community celebrated the occasion with songs, speeches and dances.

Supported by Christian Aid, these activities are part of a 3-year programme to combat deforestation and land erosion, and enhance the productivity of family plots.

 A follow-up retreat to the SSDDIM – SAVE conference that took place last November was held in January for religious leaders from different denominations. A commitment to work together in the area of HIV and AIDS was made. The Province welcomed Rev. Canon Dr. Gideon Byamugisha once again.

 Danielle Tirello from ERD visited in January, attended the retreat, and visited projects supported by ERD.

 Eight deacons were ordained in Matana diocese on 16th January
