[EAB Press - Burundi] CAPA 2nd ALL AFRICA BISHOPS CONFERENCE – ENTEBBE - UGANDA
23-29 August

The Archbishop, some of the bishops, and the Provincial Secretary, joined with other bishops from the 12 Anglican provinces in Africa to consider the challenges and obstacles of their ministry. Issues discussed under the theme “Securing the Future: Unlocking our Potential” were wide-ranging. The conference was also attended by the Archbishop of Canterbury who preached at the opening Eucharist.
A communiqué was issued detailing the conference resolutions. It can be found on CAPA’s website.

OPENING AT MATANA HOSPITAL

On the 20th August an administrative block, laboratory and a kitchen, were opened at Matana hospital. The Archbishop, the Most Rev. Bernard Ntahoturi, who officially handed responsibility for the new buildings to the doctors of Matana, welcomed guests who included Stephen Burgess from CMS UK, James Kweyu from CMS Africa, Helen Stawski from Lambeth Palace, and national and local dignitaries. The project that was funded by CMS UK provides enhanced facilities for the local community.

HIV SEMINAR FOR BANYAMULENGE

In August a seminar for youth and pastors from the Banyamulenge community (people from north east DR Congo living as refugees in Burundi) was organised to help them to understand and address some of the issues relating to HIV and AIDS.

THE COUNTRY

On the 26th August the investiture of Peter Nkurunziza as President of Burundi took place following elections that gave his party, the CNDD-FDD, a clear win and mandate for a second term in office. The electoral process went ahead peacefully although opposition parties claimed fraud and refused to participate in the presidential and legislative elections. Archbishop Bernard Ntahoturi was among religious leaders who lead prayers at the investiture. Thank you for your prayers.

MOTHERS’ UNION IN MATANA

A special weekend of thanksgiving for a peaceful election process was held recently and attended by over 3000 people. It was also the occasion to celebrate the enrolment of 46 new MU members.
