Another Senseless Killing
A statement by the Rt Revd Duleep de Chickera, Bishop of Colombo

CEYLON 091030-1
October 30, 2009

[The Church of Ceylon (E-P) - Ceylon] The incident yesterday off the Bambalapitiya seas where a person, reportedly of unsound mind, was attacked with a pole and pushed into deeper waters where he presumably drowned and died, was watched by a several persons and captured on video by an alert cameraman. The public, both at the scene and later on the TV news screens, watched this senseless killing in horror. The man had reportedly engaged in stone-throwing, but surely there are civilised and legal ways of dealing with crimes like this. Our law enforcement authorities are trained to handle situations like this and it is beyond understanding why a crime of this nature, and by a person reportedly of unsound mind, had to end in violent death in broad daylight.

I offer my condolences to the members of the family of this person and have asked my clergy to visit the family and console them.

I urge the Inspector General of Police and other concerned authorities to conduct an immediate and impartial probe into this very tragic incident and ensure that all those responsible are arrested and dealt with according to the Law. There have been several recent incidents of violence where the police have reportedly been held responsible. It needs to be investigated whether police personnel were involved in this incident as well. Public confidence in our law enforcement authorities must be maintained under all circumstances; otherwise the country can quickly descend into a state of lawlessness.

With Peace and Blessings to all.

The Rt Revd Duleep de Chickera
Bishop of Colombo 30th October 2009
