The Attack on Mr Weliamuna’s House
A Statement by the Rt Revd Duleep de Chickera, Bishop of Colombo
CEYLON 080929-1
September 29, 2008

[The Church of Ceylon (E-P) - Ceylon] The grenade attack on Mr J.C. Weliamuna’s residence is clearly an attempt to intimidate him and obstruct the good work that he is doing to create a more transparent and democratic Sri Lanka. This violent act must consequently be condemned by all democratic and peace loving Sri Lankans.

Mr Weliamuna is both a lawyer as well as a social activist. In these roles he has worked hard to expose corruption and call those who hold public office to accountability. He has championed the cause of good, transparent governance and has provided professional intervention in the area of Human Rights. Conscientious leaders like him need the appreciation and solidarity of all civil society groups at all times and most particularly when attempts are made to silence them. I am glad that the Bar Association is taking a strong stand on this issue.

Our society simply cannot allow such violent acts to pile up while the law enforcement authorities claim inability to make detections. I call upon the IGP to investigate this incident professionally and to bring the perpetrators to book.

With Peace and Blessings

The Rt Rev. Duleep de Chickera
Bishop of Colombo
