DR. JOHN GARANG –1945-2005

[CAPA - Sudan] It is with great sadness and shock that we learnt of the death of Dr. John Garang. He died in a plane crash in the mountainous Kidepo Valley on Saturday 30th July 2005, aged 60. He was the 1st Vice-President of Sudan’s new power sharing government that was set up in the January 2005 peace-deal signed in Nairobi, Kenya that ended 21 years of north-south conflict, Africa’s longest-running civil war.

Dr. Garang was described by many as a brilliant, disarming, rational, patriotic, visionary leader of strong character who stood firmly in what he believed in. We join in sending our condolences to his family and the people of Sudan.

Message from the Council of Anglican Provinces of Africa to SPLM following the death of Dr. John Garang

August 3, 2005

To the Leadership

We, the Chairman of Council of Anglican Provinces of Africa (CAPA), the Primates and the Bishop of the Diocese of Egypt have heard with great shock the untimely death of Dr. John Garang De Mabior in the plane crash on Saturday 30th July 2005 in his own land of the beloved Southern Sudan.

We as the Anglican Church in Africa, of which the Episcopal Church of Sudan is a member, grieve with you the great loss of this son of the Anglican Church, Africa and indeed the Sudan. We together with you appeal for calm so that the dreams and aspirations of Dr. Garang would not be shattered but continued as the medal of his struggles and sacrifice of his very life for the freedom of his people. We recognize your maturity in appointing Mr. Salva Kiir to fill the vacuum left that is a good direction towards tranquility.

We remember in a special way the widow of the late, Rebecca Nyandeng and the family. Thank you dear Rebecca for your courage and words of consolation to all friends of Southern Sudan and people your husband has led to victory. You have responded maturely as a wife of a great world leader and as a Christian on your own right.

May the Almighty God rest the soul of beloved John Garang in eternal peace. “I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness” – 2 Tim.4:7
