Archbishop Akinola Hails the G8 and Urges African Governments to Use Funds Wisely
CAPA 050714-1
July 14, 2005

[CAPA - Africa] Archbishop Peter J Akinola, the Primate of All Nigeria and the CAPA Chairman, said he was grateful that the G8 had lifted economic burden by cancellation of debts for the 18 poorest countries.

The Archbishop was speaking in Nairobi on Wednesday 13th July during a stopover on his way to Egypt in preparation for the Global South meeting to be held in Alexandria in October.

His main concern however was how properly the money resulting from this will be used. He urged the African governments to use these funds for the improvement of health, education, rural development, youth and women.

“The Anglican Church since the time of Archbishop Carey has been very instrumental in pushing for debt relief,” he said, “and we in Africa should not fail this answer to prayer”.

Details of his impression will follow later.
