The Anglican Church of Kenya has made an appeal to all its Christians and friends to make donations towards alleviating the famine affecting nearly 4 million people in several parts of the country.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, July 28, 2004, Anglican Churh of Kenya Archbishop Benjamin Nzimbi, singled out the worst hit districts as Turkana, Makueni, Kwale and Kilifi.

"We in the Anglican Church of Kenya wish to identify with other Kenyans facing hardships like famine,"said the Primate.

During the same function, Archbishop Nzimbi urged President Mwai Kibaki to act decisively and urgently against the culprits in government involved in graft.

"To pave way for investigation, we urge the President to remove officials who may in some way be responsible for the gross mistakes which resulted in big rip-off of public funds," he said.

President Kibaki's government has in the recent weeks been accused of condoning corruption yet it was elected on an anti-corruption agenda.

The Archbishop also received food and money donated by the faithful in the Anglican Diocese of Nairobi and All Saints Cathedral.

"If you would like to donate food or money you are welcome to join us," he appealed.

Bishop of Eldoret, The Rt Revd. Thomas Kogo also visited some of the famine-hit areas and distributed relief food to affected families.

Seasonal rains in Kenya have failed for the last two seasons causing massive crop failure. Livestock has also been affected by the dry spell.

Cheques can be drawn in favour of the Anglican Church of Kenya Treasurer, Barclays Bank of Kenya, Queensway Branch, Nairobi, Kenya, Account No 8003376, while food donations can delivered to the Anglican Church offices at ACK Garden House, second floor, situated on First Ngong Avenue, Nairobi.
