Anglicans Join AIDS Prevention Programme
by Bishop Roger Chung
August 31, 2006

[Diocese of Antsiranana - Indian Ocean] The AIDS prevention program is a priority on the government list of action for the country.

The NGO called PLEROC has been running a Training of Trainers Seminar in the Grilladin Hotel in Diego Suarez in Antsiranana Diocese. The focus of the training was the psycho-social and pastoral follow up of AIDS victims.

The government has set up an all-religious and denominational representative body to enhance the prevention of AIDS throughout the country. Christians, Moslems and Traditional religions have joined hands together to combat this modern virus which is also touching Madagascar. The number of AIDS cases are low compared to some African countries but “prevention is better than cure.”

Mr Arsene, the national president of PEROC (PLATFORME DES LEADERS RELIGIEUX ET ORGANISATION CONFESSIONELLES) stressed the need to safeguard future generations, using the preventative measures of abstinence, faithfulness and the use of condoms.

Dr Zoe, the coordinator for the AIDS program for the Eklesia Episkopaly Malagasy, represented the Anglican Church on this forum and contributed to the training of the leaders in the North of Madagascar.
