Diocese Launches Rice Mill

ANTSIRANANA 051010-1
October 10, 2005

[Diocese of Antsiranana - Indian Ocean] The Diocese of Antsiranana has for the first time embarked on a project to empower women with by providing a rice mill.

Ms Janice Rosheuvel of Episcopal Relief and Development has contributed half the price of the rice mill and the former Florida parish of the Bishop of Seychelles provided the other half.

Mr and Mrs Diogene Mahavavy, along with Archdeacon Alphege Rakotovao, will spearhead the initial move as the machine is prepared for full operation in Ambilobe in the coming weeks.

The Bishop, the Rt Rev Roger Chung Jaomalaza, is expecting to provide work to women of the Diocese with at least 10 other rice mill projects in regions where rice is cultivated in the Diocese. Donors will be sought to fulfil this need.

The projects will also be a source for helping Mission and Evangelisation in the rural regions. The internal valuing of local skills of women will be another step in the development of North Madagascar, which is still caught in poverty.

The “Making Poverty History” drive has a long way to go and the Eklesia Episkopaly Malagasy is committed to arrive at the goal with God's help, supported by the goodwill in the world Church.
