ANTSIRANANA 100611-1
June 11, 2010

[Diocese of Antsiranana - Indian Ocean] THE EPISCOPATE OF MGR ROGER CHUNG JAOMALAZA THIRD BISHOP OF ANTSIRANANA SADLY SHORTENED DUE TO A CEREBRAL VASCULAR ACCIDENT KNOWN AS A STROKE.

Dear beloved in Christ Jesus in the Diocese of Antsiranana,

It is with great sadness that I have to resign as the third Bishop of Antsiranana due to a Cerebral Vascular Accident . I regret that this severe stroke made me hemiplegic (right side of the body paralysed ) and has not allowed me to be back in Madagascar to meet up with you all before my final farewell. My spouse Mme Alice Chung Jaomalaza has taken the responsibility to repatriate the family personal belongings with the Provincial Secretary Rev Canon Samitiana who has been sent by the Archbishop His Grace the Most Rev Ian Ernest. It means that my Episcopate has lasted seven years from 1 June 2003 to 1 June 2010. I wish to thank all those who have supported me and prayed continually for me so that God’s grace may abound in my Episcopal mission in Antsiranana Diocese. I thank my son Alexander who has spent most of his secondary schooling in Madagascar and survived in the tough isolation of Diego Suarez.
Leaving the post of the Archdeacon of Mauritius and a Charismatic ministry at St Paul’s Church Plaine Verte and taking the Episcopacy in Antsiranana was indeed a major leap in the challenging Mission and Evangelism in the Eklesia Episkopaly Malagasy Church. I have been able to share the zeal of God in the power of the Holy Spirit and my passion in His service through the love of Jesus Christ during my time with you. The number of priests has grown from 15 to 42 including the newly ordained women priests.
I have seen priests engaged in evangelism with great fervour like Rev Jean Modeste in Andrafainkona or Rev Vitasolo Roline in Matsabory Laidama , to name but a few.
The most extraordinary event during my Episcopate is undoubtly the Inauguration of St Matthew’s Cathedral with special guests from PIOSA led by Bishop G Cray of Canterbury . We also had 2000 people from all over the Diocese from Nosy Be to Antalaha attending this special service. Three zebus-fatted-calves in the typical Malagasy tradition were offered for the feast on that occasion Halleluya !!!
I have learned the Malagasy language with much patience and I can gladly celebrate the Eucharist in Malagasy. I have visited all the main Churches of the vast Diocese of Antsiranana and have appreciated the warm welcome that you priests, Mother’s Union , young people, scouts and guides and all the wonderful people of Antsiranana Diocese gave me everywhere I went.
God has been faithful and good all the time in all our projects in Antsiranana , even when ill-intentioned people tried to continually cause problems and havoc in the Diocese. The saddest event was the imprisonment of the Archdeacon Venerable Julien and 2 Deacons Revs Tsikiranta and Venot in March 2010 by these renegades. These ratsy fanahy people still cause serious problems and we pray that God will change their hearts and they will repent and be forgiven.
I arrived to Madagascar as a Missionary Bishop who slowly learned the Malagasy language and culture…Remembering the words of the Scriptures
2Co 6:16 …I will make my home with my people and live among them; I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
I have been able to live in all situations and ministered to you in la Brousse and everywhere with great joy. Rev U R Bory “Ambiko” always accompanied me where I went in the Diocese and has become a Priest-Scout.
So the time to leave you and present my final farewell has come . I have done the Diocesan progress fast-fast “HAINGANKAINGANA” not slow-slow “MORAMORA” in the Malagasy way . These words I said at my Enthronement Service in 2003 at the empty yard but now filled by the New St Matthew Cathedral . I lastly built the Theological and Pastoral Center for the training of Clergy and laity before I had the stroke and I have to leave it for my successor to fulfil the awaiting tasks.
Jacob in Gen 29:25, worked 7 years for Laban before he could marry his daughter and likewise I can move on after 7 years although I had planned to stay longer. Jesus our Lord only ministered for 3 years before he moved on !!! I will continue to serve the Lord till the end of this fleeting life.

During the 7 years as Bishop of Antsiranana the achievements accomplished are :

May the Lord give you all in the Diocese of Antsiranana His love , peace and joy now and always.
