THE GOOD SHEPHERD

A BIBLICAL REFLECTION

given by The Rt Revd ROGER CHUNG PO CHUEN

( MGR JAOMALAZA )

BISHOP OF ANTSIRANANA ,MADAGASCAR,

EKLESIA EPISKOPALY MALAGASY

The Church of the Province of the Indian Ocean.

The Good Shepherd lays down his life for his sheep, but the hired servant , the salary earner runs for his life and abandons the sheep when he sees the wolf attacking the sheep . This is because the sheep do not belong to him.

The Bishop is a shepherd . It is not always easy to be a good shepherd , it can be a strenuous draining episcopal ministry and so we need to hear the voice of Jesus again everyday and sit at the feet of the Good Shepherd.

I am a missionary Bishop in Madagascar learning to be a Good Shepherd to my poverty striken Diocese . I am still making the effort to speak fluently the local language as I serve the people in their context.

King David when he was a shepherd boy while tending his flock , faced lions and bears before defeating Goliath . He only used a sling and no heavy armour to conquer his arrogant opponent. It is this David who receives the mission charge ' you shall be Shepherd of my people.'

When I was serving on the island of Mauritius , my former Bishop asked me, '' is it safe to go to your region ''. That area was then believed to a rough dangerous place and I replied that I was there all the time and did not fear for Jesus the Good Shepherd is with me !!!

Faith in God can go hand in hand with fear of men or women or whoever , in some sensitive threatening regions of our Anglican communion.

Jesus asked Peter , the then emerging new shepherd ...just as he questions you and me today , '' Do you love me? Then feed my lambs,.. tend my sheep and ..feed my sheep. ''

In his book , The 21 Irrefutable laws of Leadership, John Maxwell makes the assertion that '' everything rises and falls on Leadership. '' Maxwell argues that any endeavour that involves using other people to achieve its goals necessarily requires leadership. So how do we assess our mission, our leadership our shepherding as Bishops.

Likewise , We can also say that everything rises and falls on our faith in and our commitment to Jesus Christ our Good Shepherd. So let us hold on to the One who died on the cross for us , who takes away the sin of the world and gives us life, even abundant life.

When Philip met the Ethiopian Eunuch, he read the text ... '' As a sheep led to the slaughter or a lamb before its shearer is dumb, so he opens not his mouth , in his humiliation justice was denied him...''

Martyrdom is a reality and some shepherds among us here who are on the mission field may be called to face this ultimate test. And Jesus says that he will be with us until the end.

The Good Shepherd lays down his life for his sheep because he loves them with the Father's love ... and all of us , Shepherd - Bishops , though unworthy , are living testimonies emulating Christ Our Lord .

Shepherds have flocks with both good obedient sheep and bad disobedient sheep. Our call is to lead the flock .

Wounded shepherds like Moses, Elijah, Peter and Paul , Bishops Luwum , Trevor Huddleston and William Temple and others precede us on our leadership pilgrimage. And as we Indaba together and discern the way forward and hear afresh the gentle voice of Jesus calling us by our name.....

So Let us in reverence and fear come before God our Maker and be anointed with oil and so walk and fear no evil. '' Goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life . And I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. "

MAY THE WORDS OF MY MOUTH AND THE MEDITATION OF MY HEART BE ACCEPTABLE TO YOU O LORD, MY ROCK AND MY REDEEMER. AMEN
