<title>The Archbishop of Armagh Welcomes Act of Loyalist Decommissioning</title>
<link>http://www.aco.org/acns/digest/index.cfm/2009/6/19/The-Archbishop-of-Armagh-Welcomes-Act-of-Loyalist-Decommissioning</link>
<description>

From the Most Revd Alan Harper, OBE, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland:
I very much look forward to full confirmation of the complete decommissioning of all armaments held by loyalist paramilitaries. It will represent a further and extremely welcome step towards confidence building and the normalisation of society in Northern Ireland. I recognise that on the part of the leadership of the paramilitary groups full decommissioning has been a challenging outcome to deliver; therefore, I commend those within loyalism who have argued consistently for decommissioning over a considerable period. Now full energy and commitment can be devoted to community development and the enhancement of the lives of people in loyalist areas free from the dark shadow of the gun.

<description>

A statement by the Rt Revd Duleep de Chickera, Bishop of Colombo
An opportunity for national growth and harmony
I recently returned from one of my regular pastoral visits to our congregations (churches) and schools in Jaffna. Such visits are always educative and humbling.
What was immediately noticeable was the preoccupation with routine in the lives of the people; simply because there seems to be little else to look forward to.

The word family evokes a wide range of emotions. For some it is a very loving and supportive word that is the centre of their being. For others it is a place of distance anxiety and frustration with people who are closely related failing to talk or listen to one another. We use the term in many ways, thinking of the Church as a family and even the Anglican Communion as one family under our Lord and Saviour.

Few of us have not faced the difficulty of coping with health issues either for our loved ones or ourselves. Our gospels are filled with stories of Jesus praying touching and healing those who were in need, both physically and spiritual. The connections between faith and healing have created a widespread interest in holistic approaches in medicine and an increased interest in the contributions of faith based medical services.

On Tuesday, March 10, Bishop Suheil Dawani, Anglican Bishop in Jerusalem, was granted permission to go into Gaza to make a pastoral visit to our diocesan hospital, Ahli Arab Hospital. Bishop Suheil was accompanied by Greek Catholic Archbishop Elias Chacour and Lutheran Bishop Munib Younan. Driving in Bishop Dawani&amp;rsquo;s car, the three Church leaders made their way through the badly damaged area of northern Gaza to the hospital, which has served over 400 casualties during the recent crisis. There are approximately 3,500 Christians living in Gaza. During his visit, the Bishop said the &amp;lsquo;&amp;rsquo;Christian presence must be empowered and must remain in the Holy Land.&amp;rsquo;&amp;rsquo; He encouraged Gazan Christians to &amp;ldquo;look forward and build up what has been destroyed, to keep faith and hope in the future, and carry on living in hope of a more normal situation despite all the hardships they have been facing.&amp;rdquo;&amp;rsquo;

Empowering women to combat human trafficking: meeting challenges and creating change
&amp;ldquo;I walked out of G.B Road with my own feet and from the world of darkness into a world of light and freedom&amp;hellip;&amp;rdquo;, said Pooja, a survivor of trafficking, the heinest crime against women, as the Council for the World Mission joined hands with Church of North India to celebrate womanhood and salute the survivors of human trafficking and violence against women on the International Women&amp;rsquo;s Day in a grand manner on 8th March, 2009 at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. Pooja was joined by several other survivors, who are now human rights activists, in sharing their positive stories on the fight against human trafficking.

<description>

Prayer for Ireland: One Community into a Peaceful Future
Every St Patrick&apos;s Day takes place in the context of a specific year with specific events in our minds. This year, we cannot but think of the recent murder of two soldiers and a member of the PSNI. Those murders are entirely opposed to the message and example of Patrick. Here was a man from Britain who gave his life to bless the people of Ireland, so that they might be freed from destructive ways of living, and brought into the glorious liberty of the Gospel of Christ.

<description>

From the Most Revd Alan Harper, OBE, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland:
For a second time within a space of 48 hours death has been brought to our streets, grief visited upon families and colleagues, and injury done both to individual persons and to all the people of Ireland, north and south. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the police officer who was plucked from our midst as he and his colleagues went about their legitimate duty serving and protecting the people of Craigavon. I ask that throughout the Church of Ireland next Sunday we remember those who have died and pray for the bereaved and injured.

Papua New Guinea is a land of many ethnic groups and over 800 distinct languages of which more than half are unrelated. Bishops of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa
The Synod of Bishops of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa, meeting at Modderpoort in the Free State from 16 to 20 February 2009, have been shocked at the news that the Provincial Department of Health in the Free State has withdrawn anti-retroviral medication from HIV positive patients because of shortage of funds.
It is well known and often publicised by the National Department of Health, that patients must be counselled and prepared with great care before embarking on anti-retroviral medication. The Department is clear that it is vital for the medication to be taken consistently, with adequate food, and under diligent medical supervision; if this fails, it is said, the consequences in terms of illness and side effects may be severe.

As the death toll from the cataclysmic fires that continue to sweep rural Victoria, creeps towards 200, Anglicans from the worst affected town are determined to rebuild their devastated church.
But for Marysville residents their long journey has only just begun.
Bishop John Parkes of Wangaratta Diocese, which includes Marysville, has indicated the church, which has a congregation of approximately 50, will need a considerable amount of support a long way into the future.
&amp;ldquo;The Australian people have been hugely generous&amp;hellip; and governments are putting lot of money into rebuilding infrastructure &amp;ndash; but the real issue for us is going to be sustaining priestly ministry,&amp;rdquo; he says.

<description>

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu today highlighted the significance of the world financial crisis and discussed the implications for ministry for those struggling with the practical consequences of the downturn in the economy.
Reflecting on the need for active solidarity, Dr Sentamu said: &amp;ldquo;We have heard the predictions. This slough of economic despond is deep and we are told it will get deeper.&amp;nbsp;For every statistic on the hundreds of jobs lost, there are hundreds of stories of individual hardship and of families in need. Their struggle must be our lament &amp;ndash; as we face up to our responsibilities.&amp;rdquo;

<title>Young Muslims raise funds for Church Gaza appeal</title>
<link>http://www.aco.org/acns/digest/index.cfm/2009/2/11/Young-Muslims-raise-funds-for-Church-Gaza-appeal</link>
<description>

A group of young Muslims are backing a Church in Wales appeal for humanitarian aid in Gaza.
They have raised more than &amp;pound;1,000 for a mobile dental clinic delivering frontline medical aid around the bombed out streets of Gaza. The clinic, which has been funded totally by the Church in Wales since 2000, is part of the work of family health centres in Gaza run by the Near East Council of Churches.
Members of the Young Muslim Community Organisation in Newport, South Wales, held a bazaar to raise money following an appeal by the Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan, for urgent aid for the work of the NECC clinics. The appeal was intensified after a direct missile attack destroyed one of the family centres in Shij&amp;rsquo;ia last month.

<description>

Bishop Suheil Dawani, reaffirms his Commitment to Peace and Reconciliation among Palestinians and Israelis
The Right Revd Suheil S. Dawani, the Anglican Bishop in Jerusalem and Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem that includes Gaza, after two hours of waiting was denied entry into the Gaza Strip at the Israeli EREZ security Crossing Point&amp;nbsp;last week&amp;nbsp;along with Lutheran Bishop Mounib Younan.
Both Bishops were on a Pastoral Visit to include the Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza, an institution of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem and to members of their communities as part of a five member delegation of the Jerusalem Heads of Church. The decision for the Pastoral visit was made two weeks ago and negotiations for the permits were begun with the Israeli authorities for that purpose. They had been informed that their request to enter Gaza had been granted.

<title>Church highlights Darwin&apos;s &apos;forgotten&apos; parish work</title>
<link>http://www.aco.org/acns/digest/index.cfm/2009/2/11/Church-highlights-Darwins-forgotten-parish-work</link>
<description>

A new page paying tribute to the &amp;lsquo;forgotten&amp;rsquo; church work of Charles Darwin in his local parish of Downe, Kent, has been published on the Church of England&amp;rsquo;s website, at www.cofe.anglican.org/darwin/downe.html, to illustrate, once again, how science and the work of the Church can combine together.
The page &amp;lsquo;Darwin at Downe&apos; is one of a number of pages on the website celebrating the naturalist&amp;rsquo;s significant scientific progress, marking the bicentenary of his birth, and anticipating the 150th anniversary of the publication of the ground-breaking text &amp;lsquo;On the Origin of Species&amp;rsquo;, in November.

<description>

Impressions from the Lambeth Conference; Archbishops&apos; appeal for Zimbabwe and women in the episcopate. General Synod, London
The experiences of last summer&apos;s Lambeth Conference and last week&apos;s Primates&apos; Meeting have left me with one or two strong impressions which seem worth sharing with Synod as it prepares for further discussion of some sensitive matters this week.
