Kirsten and I had spent a wonderful evening with Carol and David at the Lambeth Conference and although David was under treatment for Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, he looked great and was "vintage" David. It was a night of lots of laughter and recollection of the "good old days."

Mothers' Union gifts make Mother's Day for thousands

A Mothering Sunday ethical giving campaign launched by the Mothers’ Union (MU) is already having a positive impact on the lives of mothers across the developing world and in the UK. Through their ethical giving catalogue, Make a Mother’s Day, supporters have donated over £90,000 to support and promote family life, far exceeding all expectations. The income from the gifts, which include support for mums in prison, provision of community midwives and training of local trainers to bring literacy and health education to communities, will be used to support both disaster relief work and long-term development work carried out by the MU.

A weekend of emotion, praise, prayer and promises, marked the visit to Angola of the Most Revd Rowan Williams and his delegation. A sports stadium in the capital city of Luanda was overflowing with people coming to join in a special Eucharist to mark the first ever visit of an Archbishop of Canterbury to Angola, on Sunday, 11 March, 2007. However, the praise was mixed with sadness for the "reality" of the situation, while local Christians cheered and applauded as their guest made his way into the stadium styled "cathedral".

Anglicans around the world will begin observing Lent with service of penitence, litany, Eucharist and imposition of ashes. Lent is uniquely ‘popular’ with Anglicans with study guides, projects, appeals (such as the Anglican Church of Canada) and Lenten books - as with the traditional Archbishop of Canterbury's lent Book. Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane - Statement on the Global South Communique 24 September 2006 I thank God for the fellowship I enjoyed with my brother Primates of CAPA and the Global South, in Kigali last week, as we shared concerns about the Anglican Communion and other matters of common interest. I wish to offer this clarification of the position of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa, in light of the potentially misleading impression that our Province has endorsed the Communique issued at the end of the meeting. Whereas Canon Livingstone Ngewu and I were present in Kigali, neither of us were made aware even of the possibility of a communiqué in the name of the Primates of the Global South, prior to its release.

In a Pastoral Letter to the Anglican Communion's Primates and presiding bishops, Dr Williams says that the 'ordinary people of God' do not want to see division as the consequence of the Anglican Communion's difficulties

Earthquake leads to massive aid effort

Christian Relief agencies have swung into action following last Saturday's devastating earthquake which has left almost 6,000 people dead in Indonesia. Measured at 6.3 on the Richter Scale the quake has injured 20,000 and a further 200,000 are estimated to be homeless. Concerns that nearby volcano Mount Merapi might erupt is adding to people's fears of further destruction

At their meeting in March 2006, the Joint Standing Committee of the Anglican Consultative Council and of the Primates' Meeting considered how the proposal in s117-120 of the Windsor Report for an Anglican Covenant could be carried forward. They commended the paper 'Towards an Anglican Covenant', which had been presented to them as basis for discussion and reflection in the Communion. The paper is now available on the website

Toronto Cathedral Brings Easter to the Web

Historic Saint James' Cathedral in Toronto was the first Anglican church in Canada to show a live webcast of its Easter Day liturgy on the web. The webcast was also available for viewing after the service. As of April 18, over 1000 people from around the world have watched the webcast and the numbers are continuing to grow.

Church Loses a Dedicated Servant, Bishop William Waqo

The Rt Revd William Waqo, Provincial Secretary of the Anglican Church of Kenya and Personal Assistant to Archbishop Benjamin Nzimbi, died in a plane crash yesterday Monday 10th April 2006 while on a peace mission to the north-eastern part of the country. He was also an Assistant Bishop of Kirinyaga Diocese.

Assembly Elects New Presidents, Central Committee A new body to lead the World Council of Churches (WCC) into the next decade was elected in Porto Alegre on Wednesday. Delegates at the WCC's 9th Assembly also endorsed measures designed to strengthen youth participation in the organization's decision-making. The Assembly elected a 150-member central committee, which serves as the main decision-making body of the Council between assemblies. The Assembly also appointed presidents for each of the world regions and for the Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox churches.
