<title>Archbishop of Canterbury&apos;s New Year Message - the treasure that is our fellow human beings</title>
<link>http://www.aco.org/acns/news.cfm/2009/1/1/ACNS4554</link>
<description>

It&amp;rsquo;s always a relief to have a bit of space after the busyness of Christmas to relax at home and mull over the past 12 months and the hopes and possibilities of the year ahead. The prospect of this coming year, though, is one that produces a lot of anxiety and insecurity for countless people. There are fears about disappearing savings, lost jobs, house repossessions and worse. While the headlines are often about the big figures, it&amp;rsquo;s the human cost that makes it real for us.

It was Christmas Eve and they kept coming, a steady flow, mostly young and obviously many were from far away places.&amp;nbsp;There was no room for me, well, not in the inn, but rather, no room in the Collegiate Church of St Peter, Westminster, known lovingly as Westminster Abbey.&amp;nbsp;They were standing everywhere. It was a stupendous vision of humanity - incarnation!&amp;nbsp;

Through their ethical giving catalogue, Make a Mother&amp;rsquo;s Day, supporters have donated over &amp;pound;90,000 to support and promote family life, far exceeding all expectations.&amp;nbsp;
The income from the gifts, which include support for mums in prison, provision of community midwives and training of local trainers to bring literacy and health education to communities, will be used to support both disaster relief work and long-term development work carried out by the MU.

A sports stadium in the capital city of Luanda was overflowing with people coming to join in a special Eucharist to mark the first ever visit of an Archbishop of Canterbury to Angola, on Sunday, 11 March, 2007. However, the praise was mixed with sadness for the &amp;quot;reality&amp;quot; of the situation, while local Christians cheered and applauded as their guest made his way into the stadium styled &amp;quot;cathedral&amp;quot;.

<title>Anglicans join world Christians as Lent begins</title>
<link>http://www.aco.org/acns/digest/index.cfm/2007/2/22/Anglicans_join_world_Christians_as_Lent_begins</link>
<description>

Anglicans around the world will begin observing Lent with service of penitence, litany, Eucharist and imposition of ashes.&amp;nbsp;Lent is uniquely &amp;lsquo;popular&amp;rsquo; with Anglicans with study guides, projects, appeals (such as the Anglican Church of Canada) and Lenten books - as with the traditional Archbishop of Canterbury&apos;s lent Book.
From Aotearoa/New Zealand and Polynesia website:
Lent is a period of intense preparation for Easter. It&apos;s also called the &amp;lsquo;forty days&amp;rsquo; - there are forty week days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Day.

May I echo the thanks for your patience which Philip has already shared with you &amp;ndash; we&amp;rsquo;re very appreciative of the fact that it is late and we&amp;rsquo;re all tired.
Also before I start, I went from one session just to check the BBC news and heard more details about he appalling bombing on the train in India and I know that all the Primates will want to put on record their grief and shock about this and their prayers for all involved and their families.

In the first week of February about 25 Anglicans will be gathering in Nigeria to explore issues of faith and citizenship in a context where Christians and Muslims are living closely together. NIFCON &amp;ndash; the Anglican Communion Network for Interfaith Concerns &amp;ndash; responded to the invitation of NIFCON President Archbishop Josiah Idowu Fearon who was keen to address the issue of how Christians can be fully involved in their communities when there are significant tensions between their faith and Islam.

Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane - Statement on the Global South Communique
24 September 2006
I thank God for the fellowship I enjoyed with my brother Primates of CAPA and the Global South, in Kigali last week, as we shared concerns about the Anglican Communion and other matters of common interest.
I wish to offer this clarification of the position of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa, in light of the potentially misleading impression that our Province has endorsed the Communique issued at the end of the meeting.&amp;nbsp; Whereas Canon Livingstone Ngewu and I were present in Kigali, neither of us were made aware even of the possibility of a communiqu&amp;eacute; in the name of the Primates of the Global South, prior to its release.

<title>Archbishop Rowan Williams Book from Morehouse</title>
<link>http://www.aco.org/acns/digest/index.cfm/2006/8/23/Archbishop_Rowan_Williams_Book_from_Morehouse</link>
<description>

&apos;Grace and Necessity: Reflections on Art and Love&apos; from Morehouse Publishing, by Rowan Williams, 172 pages, hardcover, $19.95.
In his first major new work of original theology for some years, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams, explores the borderlands between theology, art and literature in order to pioneer a new theological expression of grace and human creativity.
Profoundly influenced by some of the most original and creative minds in the recent Catholic tradition - Jacques Maritain, the artist Eric Gill and the poet and painter David Jones - he explores a new aesthetic and the concept of an artwork as a structure in itself and not as a &apos;reproduction.&apos; The sign or symbol, whether verbal or material, is a necessary vehicle of meaning and not an illustration of it, calling not for reduction or explanation but response.
In Archbishop Williams&apos; development of his theme he discusses modern philosophy (Wittgenstein&apos;s aesthetics) but also examines modern art, the work of the American writer Flannery O&apos;Connor and the writings of the poet and artist David Jones on art and sacrament and the underlying theology of artistic production.
