Brief history of Diocese:

The first missionaries to Madagascar arrived in 1864, and their work was at first confined to the East Coast, particularly in the region of Toamasina. The first Anglican Bishop was Robert Kestell Cornish, who was consecrated in 1874. Madagascar was under the Diocese of Canterbury and it became separate diocese, the Diocese of Madagascar. In 1969 Diocese of Madagascar divide into 3, Antananarivo, Toamasina, Antsiranana. Now the Diocese has 28 parish centres, but only 12 priest.

Any previous or existing Links:

The Diocese of Canterbury help us in mission of evangelism and in the exchange of students to study in England. The Diocese has also has an exchange of priest from Diocese of Mauritius.

Reason for wanting a Link:

  • To exchange experiences from each others diocese
  • To share in mission programmes.
  • To share in development programmes such as agriculture.

What expectations you have of the Link?

  • To build good relationships with another part of the Anglican Communion
  • To learn from another culture.
  • Collaboration in mission (work) work together
  • Exchange programmes with youth, clergy and laity

What part of the world you would like your Link to be?

  • In Africa- (Mombasa- Wusasa)
  • In Central America (Costa Rica)
  • In Japan.

Describe the style and patterns of church life and ministry in your diocese.

Long time ago, the Diocese was very conservative. But now they practice the revival. Youth are very enthusiastic and enjoy singing or dancing. We have 10 young priests plus 3 older priests. The Diocese is on the east coast of Madagascar, the first big port in Madagascar is in Toamasina. Most of Christians live in this side of the country.

Would you like your Link diocese to reflect or contrast with the pattern described above?

It depend the Diocese but not obligatory or necessary to reflect.
