Episcopal Church endorses guide to new film

A guide from the National Council of Churches USA (NCC) to a new film about the last days of Jesus Christ, has been endorsed by the Episcopal Church's ecumenical and interfaith officer as a helpful guide to congregations viewing the controversial film. Called “The Passion of the Christ” and directed by Mel Gibson, the film is to open at cinemas on Ash Wednesday (25 February).

Episcopalians join NCCC visit to Cuban churches

Episcopalians were part of a thirty-member delegation of the National Council of Churches of Christ (USA) invited to Cuba, 22-28 January 2004. The Rt Revd C Christopher Epting, the Presiding Bishop's Deputy for Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations, and the Revd Susanne Watson Epting, executive director of the North American Association for the Diaconate, represented the Episcopal Church in a consultation with Cuban churches on shared concerns and in celebration of the consecration of the new Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St Nicholas in Havana.

Episcopal Relief and Development helps cyclone victims in Samoa

Episcopal Relief and Development is providing support to victims of Cyclone Heta, which hit Samoan islands in the Pacific in early January. Winds, flash flooding, and strong waves damaged homes and destroyed crops. The cyclone caused power outages and disrupted phone service. An estimated 600 people remain in shelters and hundreds of other people have been displaced from their homes.

North American conservatives and global South Anglicans seek discipline of ECUSA

Archbishop Drexel Gomez, Primate of the Province of the West Indies, was among the speakers who stirred the "Future of the Anglican Communion" conference meeting January 8-9 in Charleston, South Carolina, with calls for disciplinary action against the Episcopal Church, USA, (ECUSA) for its stance on homosexuality and the interpretation of scripture and tradition. "In Anglicanism today there does not exist a mechanism for dealing with our problems," said Archbishop Gomez. "The time has come to introduce such a mechanism into our common life."

Largest group of missionary trainees at Seminary of the Southwest 10-25 January
