Statement issued by Archbishop of Cape Town, Njongonkulu Ndungane, regarding the government's stance

So how can one even contemplate doubling AIDS related national infant mortality - an estimated 100 infants a day - as government seems hell bent on de-registering a treatment that even our Constitutional Court acknowledges is the best resource we have at the moment.  How can our government, born out of a struggle for justice, strive to ignore the directive of its own court?

Caring for Creation Second Report

Tuesday 20 August 2002

This morning delegates began, as they do each day, with meditation led by Claire Foster, taking one sentence from scripture. Today it was “O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Thy name in all the earth”. Later, in the morning session, Peter Mann, who whilst addressing ‘Sacred Meals and Global Food Systems’, referred to the meditation as underpinning our recognition of food as sacred. Peter had been a Benedictine monk and in his work with World Hunger Year, he had been reminded of the importance of the monastic tradition of sharing meals together, and eating the food they had grown in their own fields. He questioned why, when there was an abundance of food throughout the world, 800 million people live in hunger, often in the countries producing most food.

On the appointment of the Most Revd Rowan Williams as Archbishop of Canterbury

I am delighted by the appointment of Rowan Williams. I have known him and his wife Jane since the 80's - a very difficult time for the church in South Africa. Statement issued by Anglican Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane

at Bishopscourt, Cape Town on 17 July 2002

Passing through London I was horrified by newspaper headlines stating that the average life expectancy in Africa will soon be only 26 years. The same UNAIDS report that made such alarming news around the world warns that the AIDS pandemic is yet to peak - we haven't seen the worst of it yet!

Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane responds to Constitutional Court ruling on AIDS in South Africa

The Constitutional Court's ruling that compels the government to provide drugs that reduce the risk of the transmission of HIV from mother to foetus is both welcome and alarming. While the outcome is a tribute to those who have persevered against severe odds to bring the Government to its moral obligation to care for its citizens, we cannot lose sight of the time and lives that have in the meanwhile been lost and will continue to be at risk until our State hospitals shift into gear. I have said it before and will say it again: to dither on these issues is to fail Creation.

"They almost instinctively had to be on the side of the disenfranchised, of the voiceless ones," he said.
