The Church Mission Society in London has issued an urgent call for prayer and practical help for 33,000 Sudanese refugees in northern Kenya. The inhabitants of Kakuma camp are slowly dying of malnutrition because their food rations have been cut to starvation level.

Churches ask for more time for elector registration

Further to calls by the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) and the Roman Catholic Church in Kenya for an extension to the deadline for the issue of new generation ofidentity cards, the President of Kenya extended the deadline by a month to the end of February. But Church leaders have again called for a further extension. The cards are a requirement for voter registration for national elections.

President Extends ID's Deadline

Further to calls by the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) and the Roman Catholic Church in Kenya for an extension to the 31st January deadline for the issue of new generation identity cards, the President of Kenya, Daniel arap Moi, has extended the deadline by a month. President Moi made the announcement on 30th January stating that he had made the extension after having considered the difficulties many Kenyans have had to get the new cards.

Kenya: Archbishop Enthroned

The Most Revd David Gitari was enthroned last Sunday (12 January) at All Saints Cathedral, Nairobi, and becomes Primate of the Anglican Church in Kenya and Bishop of Nairobi. The Revd Canon John L Peterson represented the ACC at the enthronement.

Bishop Gitari elected Archbishop of Kenya

The Rt Revd David Gitari, Bishop of Kirinyaga Diocese, has been elected Archbishop of the Church of the Province of Kenya by the Church's 210-person strong Electoral College. The college has representatives from the 22 Anglican dioceses in the Province. Initially there were five candidates for the post. Bishop Horace Etemesi withdrew before polling started. Bishop Stephen Kewasis was eliminated in the first round of voting and bishop Benjamin Nzimbi was eliminated in the second round. This left Bishop Joseph Wasonga and Bishop David Gitari. Bishop Gitari won by a two thirds majority in the final voting.

Kenyan Churches Reject President's Accusations

Kenya's President, Daniel arap Moi, has made his most scathing attack yet on Kenya's Church leaders, describing the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) as "subversive organisation Number 1". The President made his criticisms on 6 September, a month after the NCCK and the country's Roman Catholic bishops issued statements calling for a range of political reforms before the next general elections.

Churches call for constitutional review

An immediate constitutional review and an all-party dialogue on the composition of the country's next electoral commission have been called for both by the National Council of Churches in Kenya and Kenya's Roman Catholic Bishops. Both bodies have said that change must come before the next general election, which has to take place before the end of 1997. The Government reacted to the call by accusing Church leaders of having a hidden agenda aimed at precipitating anarchy.

Anglican Bishop Killed in Air Crash

The Assistant Bishop of the Kirinyaga CPK Diocese, the Rt. Rev. Andrew Adano Tuye was killed in an air crash on Saturday 27th July 1996. He died with senior government officials when the police helicopter they were travelling in crashed just outside Marsabit town about 300 kms North of Nairobi.
