The Community Ministries of the Diocese of Ottawa, Canada, has refused to take part in schemes where those in receipt of government benefit are forced to work. The so-called "workfare" programme has been criticised for being unethical.

More than 95% of the population in the vast Anglican Diocese of Quebec is French-speaking, and yet for over 200 years there hasn't been a francophone Anglican parish in this part of Canada. Canadian Giving Increases

All 30 dioceses of the Anglican Church of Canada have met or exceeded amounts they had agreed to pay in 1996 to help finance national ministry and mission. Seven dioceses actually paid more to the apportionment, or program, part of the budget than they had originally committed themselves to. Additional payments were made by the dioceses of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec, Huron, Niagara, Ontario, Toronto and Edmonton.

Canada: First Aboriginal Diocesan Bishop

Canada's first aboriginal person to become a diocesan bishop is the Right Reverend Gordon Beardy. Bishop Beardy, 46 is a former Oji-Cree chief who has been suffragan bishop in the Diocese of Keewatin since September, 1993. His election as the diocesan, or senior bishop, will be seen as significant by the Church, especially by native Anglicans who make up a majority of the diocese.

Canadian Judge Rules that Priest cannot Sue the Church

 A Canadian judge has ruled that an Anglican priest cannot sue for wrongful dismissal. Justice Hector Soubliere of the Ontario Court ruled on an unusual civil suit filed by Arthur Brewer against the Anglican Church of Canada's Ottawa diocese and Bishop John Baycroft.

The Anglican Church of Canada Urges Members to Fast

The Anglican Church of Canada's national council has approved a motion asking Church members to join in a fast in solidarity with people affected the Canadian Health Service Transfer (CHST). The date of the fast is 1 April, Holy Week Monday, and the day of implementation of the CHST. The decision to commend the fast to Canadian Anglicans was made in March by the Council of General Synod, the Church's governing body in between meetings of General Synod.

Michael Clarke, a youth worker at Trinity, Streetsville, has been named to the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest awards. Mr Clarke is being honoured for his work with troubled youth in Toronto and Mississauga. The award recognises outstanding achievement and service to Canada and to humanity.
