Statement by the Secretary General

The Joint Standing Committee of the Primates and the Anglican Consultative Council accompanied the Archbishop of Canterbury to the meeting of the House of Bishops of the Episcopal Church which has been meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana, between Wednesday 19 September and Tuesday 25 September. We gathered at the invitation of presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori and of the House of Bishops in order to converse with them about the current tensions encountered in the life of the communion.

Anglican Centre in Rome - Post Open for Applications

Applications are invited for the post of Representative of the Archbishop of Canterbury to the Holy See and Director of the Anglican Centre in Rome. The Archbishop of Canterbury and the Governors of the Anglican Centre in Rome wish to appoint a new Representative of the Archbishop of Canterbury to the Holy See and Director of the Anglican Centre in Rome to succeed the Rt Revd John Flack who is retiring on 28 February 2008 after nearly five years in the post.

Lambeth Conference Funding Opportunities Announced

With less than one year to go to the Lambeth Conference 2008, the Conference Office is set to invite further contributions for its ongoing bursary programme. The bursaries enable bishops and bishops’ spouses to attend the Lambeth Conference, as well as helping fund those attending who will help ensure the smooth running of both the Lambeth Conference and the Spouses Conference when it meets in Canterbury next July.

Lambeth Marketplace - bookings now open for 2008

One element of the Lambeth Conference that always generates a lot of interest is the Marketplace. The Marketplace provides a showcase for things going on around the Anglican Communion, a space for delegates to relax, meet friends and shop and will now give day visitors a flavour of the Anglican Communion.

Statement from Anglican Provincial Secretaries' Conference

The Provincial Secretaries of the Anglican Communion met in Hong Kong from 23 to 30 August 2007 for the sixth in a series of informal meetings started in the 1980s. Provincial Secretaries are key administrators for each province and the conference programme was designed to further their professional development, encourage them in their faith and ministry, increase knowledge and understanding of the challenges facing other Provinces and to strengthen bonds within the Communion.

Secretary General Visits Anglicans in DR Congo

At the invitation of Archbishop Fidele Dirokpa, Canon Kenneth Kearon, Secretary General of the Anglican Communion, attended the Provincial Synod meeting of L'Eglise Anglicane du Congo held in Bunia last week. ACO: 2000 Greet the Archbishop of Canterbury in Angola

A weekend of emotion, praise, prayer and promises, marked the visit to Angola of the Most Revd Rowan Williams and his delegation. A sports stadium in the capital city of Luanda was overflowing with people coming to join in a special Eucharist to mark the first ever visit of an Archbishop of Canterbury to Angola, on Sunday, 11 March, 2007. However, the praise was mixed with sadness for the "reality" of the situation, while local Christians cheered and applauded as their guest made his way into the stadium styled "cathedral".

Church leaders to make pilgrimage to Bethlehem

Christian leaders have called for prayers throughout Advent for Christians in the Holy Land as they prepare for a pilgrimage to the birth place of Jesus Christ. The four heads of Churches will undertake the pilgrimage in solidarity with Christians living in the Holy Land in the week leading up to Christmas. Archbishop and Pope share worship: 'our churches share witness and service'

His Holiness Pope Benedict XVIth and the Archbishop of Canterbury today shared worship together at the Redemptoris Mater Chapel in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. The worship followed a formal Audience in the Papal Library. Earlier, in a Common Declaration signed by Pope Benedict and Dr Williams, the two leaders expressed thanks for forty years of cooperation and dialogue between the Roman Catholic church and the churches of the Anglican Communion and renewed the historic commitment to the goal of 'full visible communion in the truth of Christ'

Archbishop and Cardinal Pray in the Sistine Chapel

The Anglican and Roman Catholic delegations in Rome for the historic meeting of the Archbishop and the Pope and celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Anglican Centre in Rome, visited the Sistine Chapel today for prayers, marking the visit of Archbishop Michael Ramsey to Pope Paul VI in 1966. Archbishop of Canterbury - prayers for the 'ordinary people of God' as covenant plans progress

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has spoken of his prayers for ordinary churchgoers who are 'puzzled, wearied, or disoriented' by the present controversies within the Anglican Communion. In a Pastoral Letter to the Anglican Communion's Primates and presiding bishops, Dr Williams says that the 'ordinary people of God' do not want to see division as the consequence of the Anglican Communion's difficulties

Earthquake leads to massive aid effort

Christian Relief agencies have swung into action following last Saturday's devastating earthquake which has left almost 6,000 people dead in Indonesia. Measured at 6.3 on the Richter Scale the quake has injured 20,000 and a further 200,000 are estimated to be homeless. Concerns that nearby volcano Mount Merapi might erupt is adding to people's fears of further destruction

Towards an Anglican Covenant

At their meeting in March 2006, the Joint Standing Committee of the Anglican Consultative Council and of the Primates' Meeting considered how the proposal in s117-120 of the Windsor Report for an Anglican Covenant could be carried forward. They commended the paper 'Towards an Anglican Covenant', which had been presented to them as basis for discussion and reflection in the Communion. The paper is now available on the website

Toronto Cathedral Brings Easter to the Web

Historic Saint James' Cathedral in Toronto was the first Anglican church in Canada to show a live webcast of its Easter Day liturgy on the web. The webcast was also available for viewing after the service. As of April 18, over 1000 people from around the world have watched the webcast and the numbers are continuing to grow.

Church Loses a Dedicated Servant, Bishop William Waqo

The Rt Revd William Waqo, Provincial Secretary of the Anglican Church of Kenya and Personal Assistant to Archbishop Benjamin Nzimbi, died in a plane crash yesterday Monday 10th April 2006 while on a peace mission to the north-eastern part of the country. He was also an Assistant Bishop of Kirinyaga Diocese.
