We, the Primates of the Anglican Communion, gathered in Canterbury, have received a report from the Council of Anglican Provinces in Africa on the impact of HIV/AIDS on the African continent. The presentation was led by the Archbishop of Cape Town, the Most Revd Njongonkulu Ndungane, who was mandated by the Primates in March 2001 to co-ordinate a Communion-wide strategy to address this immense global crisis of human suffering.

Statement of Anglican Primates on the Middle East

We, the Primates of the Anglican Communion representing 75,000,000 Anglican Christians in 164 countries of the world, gathered in Canterbury, have taken counsel following a message concerning the escalating conflict in Israel/Palestine which we received from the Anglican Bishop in Jerusalem the Right Reverend Riah H Abu El-Assal. This was delivered to us by the President Bishop of the Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East, the Most Reverend Iraj Mottahedeh.

HRH Duke of Kent to open new wing of International Study Centre

in the presence of the Archbishop of Canterbury

HRH the Duke of Kent will open the residential wing of the International Study Centre at Canterbury Cathedral on Tuesday, 16th April 2002 at 2.15 pm in the presence of the Archbishop of Canterbury and 34 other Archbishops from around the world. The Lord Lieutenant of Kent, Mr Allan Willettt, and the Lord Mayor of Canterbury, Councillor Fred Whitemore, will also be present. The Duke will be invited to open the building by the Dean of Canterbury, the Very Revd Robert Willis, and the Cathedral Choristers will sing before and after the unveiling of the stone that will record the event.

Archbishops from across the world meet in Canterbury

35 of the 38 Anglican Archbishops from across the world will meet in Canterbury for a week from the 10th April 2002. They will be staying in Canterbury Cathedral’s International Study Centre, sited on the South side of the ancient Cathedral, which was founded by St Augustine in about 597. The Archbishops and their staff will meet in private to share prayer and reflection and to discuss issues facing Christianity in the 21st Century. They will also be present when the new residential wing of the Centre is opened by HRH the Duke of Kent on the 16th April 2002 at 2.15 pm.

This will be the final meeting of the Primates under the chairmanship of Archbishop George Carey. The Archbishop of Canterbury is spiritual leader of the world's 70 million Anglicans.
