Church of Uganda commissions a $10 million project

The Church of Uganda has commissioned a US$10 million project expected to guarantee the welfare of Christians and clergy of the Church. Until now, Church workers in Uganda have had to retire without any pension or retirement benefits. The President of the Republic of Uganda, H.E. Uganda trip establishes work in three Dioceses

Lydia Tushabe enjoys being in business. She started out with a little hair salon in a room by the side of a road that runs into Kabale. With her loan from the Five Talents funded program she was able to open a retail shop with primary sales in bananas. She purchases in bulk and then acts as a wholesaler, selling smaller quantities to others, who in turn sell the bananas in area village markets.

Hope amidst hopelessness

On 18 March 2000 around 500 people, many of them young, perished in a fire that swept through a community church in a remote South Western corner of Uganda. The victims of what was believed to be a deliberate torching of the building, were all members of the Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments. Rebels attack area around Anglican hospital

Kagando Hospital, an Anglican Hospital in north east Uganda, has become a haven for people fearing rebel attack in the area. On 6 October an estimated 18 people were killed by rebel forces in the area around the hospital. The hospital is in a small remote village and is a major local institution, employing many from the surrounding area. It has become a place of refuge for nearby communities, putting a strain on its resources.

Bishop's Wife Killed by Landmine

Mrs Winifred Ochola, the wife of the Bishop of Kitgum, in northern Uganda was killed by a landmine on 23 May when a truck she was travelling in hit a mine and killed her and three others. According to the Church Mission Society in London the incident took place a long way from ongoing military activity. The Bishop of Kitgum, the Rt Revd Macleord Baker Ochola II, is a leading campaigner for reconciliation and has made strong calls for an end to rebel activity in northern Uganda.

Anglicans Lead Reconciliation Movement in Rwanda

Two thousand people listened carefully as the Anglican Bishop of Lango, Uganda, the Rt Revd Melchizedek Otim recounted the trauma of having to hide in exile from Idi Amin's forces in 1977. Anglican Bishop Urges Peace Talks

Uganda's Vice-President, Dr Specioza Windira Kazibwe, has criticised an Anglican bishop for urging the Government to hold peace talks with armed rebels in northern Uganda.P Addressing a crowd in the town of Kitgum on 9 February, the Vice-President described the leader of the rebel Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), Joseph Kony, and his supporters as "killers, rapists and people who had devastated the economy". The LRA is terrorising the towns and villages of northern Uganda, killing hundreds of people and abducting teenagers to force them to become guerrillas in the struggle for control of the region.

Uganda: Refugee Bible School Attacked and Reopened

The Bishop Alison Bible School in Koboko in north-west Uganda was razed to the ground at the end of October by Ugandan rebels believed to be sponsored by the Government of Khartoum in their attempt to get the Sudanese refugees in the area back into the Sudan. Families were made to stay inside their houses as the grass roofs were set alight. Only when the smoke and fire were threatening to kill them were people let out.

New Anglican Studies Centre Open in Uganda

An Anglican Studies Centre has opened at Bishop McAllister College in Kyogyera in West Ankole Diocese. The Centre will serve the whole of the province and its aim is to strengthen Ugandan's understanding of their Anglican heritage in the African context. The new centre is the vision of the Rt Revd Y K Bamunoba, the Bishop of the Diocese.
