New Primus for the Scottish Episcopal Church

The Rt Rev David Chillingworth was elected Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church at an Episcopal Synod held during the annual meeting of the General Synod of the Scottish Episcopal Church. Bishop David was the single nomination and his election was supported by all other six bishops. Bishop David has been Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane since 2005 and succeeds the Most Rev Dr Idris Jones, Bishop of Glasgow & Galloway who stepped down as Primus.

'One of the best ways to help Africa is to stop the Arms Trade'

This will be part of a call on the Ministry of Defence by the Most Rev Dr Idris Jones, Primus of the ScottishEpiscopal Church, when he presents a Petition containing about 20,000 signatures calling for the government not to invest in a replacement for Trident, and to begin the process of decommissioning nuclear weapons. Churches urged to strengthen Muslim ties after attack

Churches across Scotland were today urged to strengthen their ties with Muslim communities in their towns and cities following the start of hostilities against Iraq. Scottish Churches' first steps to union

Scottish churches to remember September 11

Scottish Episcopal churches will be opening their doors on Wednesday to remember the September 11 attacks and their aftermath. Notable events include a prayer labyrinth at Edinburgh University's Chaplaincy Centre in Bristo Square. People will be able to walk through a replica of the Labyrinth at Chartres Cathedral in France, stopping at set points to pray and reflect.

Woman bishop motion wins overwhelming support

Members of the Scottish Episcopal Church have overwhelmingly supported a motion to allow women bishops, at an historic vote at their General Synod. The vote was the first concrete step towards changing 2,000 years of tradition, which has reserved the top church job for men. It could eventually give Scotland the first women bishops in the UK.

Aberdeen church to tackle sex and violence

An Aberdeen church is tackling the thorny subjects of sex and violence during a week packed with lectures and events. The Scottish Episcopal church of St John the Evangelist, in St John's Place off Crown Street, has invited a top professor to talk on the subject of "Jesus, Sex and Violence" at 7:30pm next Wednesday 22 May. Professor Gordon Graham, Regius Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Aberdeen, will look at what Jesus has to say on the two controversial topics.

Bishop makes Middle East plea to Mandela and Tutu

A senior Scottish churchman today wrote to Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu to ask them to intervene in the growing Middle East conflict. The Rt Revd Neville Chamberlain, Bishop of Brechin, said that the Holy Land's only hope was to follow the example of the two South African leaders and set up a form of Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

All invited to prayer service for Queen Mother

The rector of the church where the Queen Mother was confirmed 86 years ago invited all comers to a special prayer service for her. The Revd Canon Malcolm Richardson opened the doors of St John's, Forfar, from 9.30am on Tuesday 9 April. Canon Richardson said, "This was a chance for our congregation and for people from surrounding areas to come to church to pray." The service included an address by Colonel David Lloyd-Jones, a member of St John's congregation and a former administrator at nearby Glamis Castle - the Queen Mother's family home. Colonel Lloyd-Jones' address included personal reflections based on the many times he had met the Queen Mother during his time at the castle between 1978-88. He said the four qualities that exemplified all she did were loyalty, example, administration and duty.

Cutting-edge Cathedral opens doors to artists

Worshippers at St Mary's Cathedral, Glasgow, are to share their pews with some of Scotland's most avant-garde artists. The Gothic revival building has taken on a new role as a spiritual home for experimental art after its performance facilities were upgraded in a £3.5m restoration. The West End congregation, which includes many painters, writers and musicians, has just moved back after 20 years of rebuilding and construction. Members are planning to celebrate their return with a festival of music and the arts throughout the month of May called FEAST. Ten contemporary Scottish artists will be given free rein to display groundbreaking works inside the building.
