Papua New Guinea approves Covenant and says it is "proud to belong to the Anglican Communion"

The Anglican Church of Papua New Guinea has announced that its Provincial Council last week approved and accepted the Anglican Covenant. Writing to the Secretary General of the decision on behalf of the House of Bishops, the Bishop of Port Moresby, the Rt Revd Peter Ramsden, said the decision was based on their understanding of the name Anglican Communion.

Women's World Day of Prayer

On Friday 6 March over 3 million people worldwide will be praying and worshipping together during an annual day of prayer, using a service prepared by Christian Women in Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea is a land of many ethnic groups and over 800 distinct languages of which more than half are unrelated. As a result, there is great cultural diversity, yet the women of Papua New Guinea have emphasised the oneness there is in Christ.

New Bishop for the Diocese of Popondota

Father Kopapa is currently the Chaplain of Martyrs' Memorial School near Popondetta, the Anglican Church of Papua New Guinea's oldest high school. The date of his consecration has yet been set, but it is likely to take place in January 2006.

Chair of Anglican Family Network to join the Church in Papua New Guinea

John and Della Rea have been invited by Anglican Primate of Papua New Guinea, the Most Revd James Ayong, to work for the Province as Project & Development Officers, as the Church copes with a deteriorating economic and social situation. They will share responsibilities, fulfilling a long cherished wish to work again in a developing country. John and Della come from the Edinburgh diocese, where they are members of the Scottish Episcopal Church.

New Bishop for Popondota

Fr Roger Jupp was born in London in 1956 and was brought up in Blackheath. He was educated at Haberdashers' Aske's Hatcham Boys' Grammar School 1968-1974 and then read Theology at St Edmund Hall, Oxford 1975-1978. The following year he worked as a Nursing Auxiliary at St Christopher's Hospice for the terminally ill in SE London before going to train for the priesthood at Chichester Theological College. It was there that he first became aware of the life of the Anglican Church in Papua New Guinea through the annual commemoration of Father Vivian Redlich, one of the New Guinera Martyrs, who was trained at the seminary in the 1930s.

Papua New Guinea: Worst drought in decades

Papua New Guinea's worst drought in decades has prompted the Anglican Board of Mission in Australia to launch an emergency relief fund. Lucy Palmer, a PNG based journalist, writes that the gardens have withered, the earth is scorched and the weak and elderly are starting to die. "In another month thousands of our closest neighbours could be facing their worst famine this century," she writes.

Papua New Guinea: Primate Speaks Out

"The Church in Papua New Guinea (PNG) is being shaken up. It will be interesting to see how God will lead us, to speak to and contain these changes", says the new Archbishop-elect of Papua New Guinea. Bishop James Ayong was in Australia this month for a 10-day visit. It is a month since his election as Primate, and a year since his consecration as the Bishop of Aipo Rongo (succeeding Paul Richardson, now in Wangaratta). He is to be enthroned Archbishop of PNG on 13 July at All Souls', Lae, the church where he was ordained deacon 13 years ago.

New Primate of the Anglican Church of Papua New Guinea

The Rt Revd James Ayong, the Bishop Aipo Rongo, has been elected the new Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Papua New Guinea (PNG) by the Provincial Council. He will succeed the Most Revd Bevan Meredith who has retired. Bishop James Ayong has been the Bishop of Aipo Rongo for a year. He was formerly a parish priest of Gerehu parish in the Diocese of Port Moresby before he succeeded Bishop Paul Richardson as Bishop last May.
