Archbishop of Canterbury - visit to Pakistan

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams began an eight-day visit to Pakistan with a church service in Rawalpindi. Speaking in Christ Church, Rawalpindi on Tuesday [22nd November] Dr Williams told the congregation that their situation was similar to the boy whose loaves and fishes fed the five thousand (in John 6 v 5-14).

CMS missionaries evacuated

Due to the uncertainties following the September 11 attacks on the US, CMS missionaries in Pakistan are leaving the country and will return to Australia by the end of September. Many expatriates are leaving Pakistan with a number of embassies having issued general evacuation orders.

Multi-Faith Delegation visits Christian villages in Pakistan

In February this year three Christian villages in Pakistan were attacked and thousands of buildings and homes were destroyed by Muslims from neighbouring villages. The riots had been incited by broadcasts from local mosques and an estimated 20,000 Muslims went on the rampage. Twelve churches and 4,000 homes were completely destroyed in the villages of Khanewal, Shanti Nagar and Tobba.

PM Deplores Attacks on Christians

The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, has deplored the violence against the Christian community following recent outbreaks of violence in the Christian villages of Shantinagar and Khanewal in Punjab Province. He said that his Government would ensure the full protection and equal rights of minorities in Pakistan. He pledged that victims of the incident would be compensated and places of worship would be rebuilt at Government expense.

Christians and Muslims Deplore Attacks on Christians in Palistan

Following the rioting and destruction of three Christian villages in Pakistan earlier this month by Muslims, leaders of the Christian and Muslim communities in the City of Bradford spoke out deploring the violence. In a letter sent to the Pakistani Acting High Commissioner in the UK they urged Pakistan's new Government to restore the confidence of religious minorities in the country and ensure that their basic rights as citizens are protected, and to commit itself to helping make good all the losses. The letter was signed by leaders of both Christian and Muslim communities including the Bishop of Bradford and the General Secretary of the Bradford Council for Mosques.

Churches urged into dialogue with Islam

There could be no one fixed or stereotyped Christian response to the challenge of Islam in the multi-religious, multi-lingual, multi-racial and multi-cultural situation prevalent in most of the advanced countries of the world, the Anglican Consultative Council, meeting in Panama, was told today, 18 October 1996. "There would be many and varied responses depending on the situation" said the Rt Rev Alexander Malik, Bishop of Lahore in the Church of Pakistan.
