Archbishop of Canterbury: message of sympathy for Mumbai victims

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams has sent a message of sympathy for victims of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai earlier this week. Freedom of Religion Bill in Gujarat: Violating Religious Freedom

The National Council of Churches in India views the Bill being presented in the Gujarat Assembly today not as a step in enhancing and protecting the freedom of religion of the citizens but as an act of conscious and wilful harassment of the minorities, especially Christians, prohibiting them to practice their religious faith.

Peace March in the Diocese of Amritsar

The Christian Community once again expressed its solidarity and ecumenism by joining together in a massive procession in the city of Amritsar to mark the entry of our Lord Jesus into the Holy City of Jerusalem. The procession was jointly organised by the Church of North India, the Salvation Army Church, the Roman Catholic Church and many other Christian congregations throughout the Districts of Amritsar and Gurdaspur in Punjab.

Three bishops consecrated in India

Three bishops were consecrated on the same day for the first time in the 30 year history of the Church of North India (CNI). The consecration was carried out by a host of bishops, led by the Most Revd Vinod Peter, Moderator of CNI.

First Harvest Festival

The first ever Harvest Festival was held recently at the rural church in Aheri, Diocese of Nagpur, in North India. The gifts that the congregation brought included onions, cabbages, cauliflowers, beans and tomatoes. Many had brought rice, in varying quantities from one farmer's large sack to children's small newspaper bags.

Investing in human potential

A new Centre for Human Potential Development for the Church of North India (CNI) was inaugurated on 28 March 2000. All the dioceses of the church were represented at the event, led by the Moderator of the CNI, the Most Revd Vinod Peter. A two day consultation followed, "Human Potential Development: A Challenge to the Church in the New Millennium", which sought to develop the uses and purposes of the new centre, and assess the wide training needs of the Church.

Rededication of poet Bishop's church

Army chaplain Revd Henry Fischer founded the church of St John the Baptist, Meerut, India, in 1819 as a garrison church. After three years of construction, the building was consecrated in 1824 by the Rt Revd Reginald Heber, the then Bishop of Calcutta.
