Update from the Diocese of Jerusalem on the Al Ahli Arab Hospital, Gaza City

Today (Wednesday 14 January 2009) brought more injured and wounded patients to Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza City, as each of the last 18 days has. One patient who came to Al Ahli recently was Mohan'nad, a 9 year-old boy whose leg was badly injured when a building near his home was damaged. Thankfully, the doctors and staff at Al Ahli were able to save his leg.

Jerusalem, January 7th, 2009 - At a time when great tragedy is occurring in the Holy Land in Gaza, I want to share some insight into what we are experiencing on a moment to moment basis. Our Diocese has one of 11 hospitals serving a population of 1.5 million residents in the Gaza Strip. The Al Ahli Arab (Anglican) Hospital has been in operation for over 100 years and has a very dedicated medical staff of doctors, nurses, technicians and general services personnel.

Christians in Iraq

The Anglican Bishop of Cyprus and the Gulf, whose diocese includes Iraq, has expressed his strong solidarity with all Christians there at a time when they in particular are suffering a spate of violence. The bishop recently visited Baghdad, where he met religious and political leaders, including major Shi'a and Sunni figures, as well as diplomats.

Mothers' Union Baghdad addresses humanitarian crisis

The Mothers’ Union revealed today that it has been distributing emergency food aid to people in Baghdad through its 400 member-strong branch in the city. Utilizing its Emergency Relief Fund, which enables Mothers’ Union branches all over the world to facilitate work in times of crises, Mothers’ Union has sent £5,000 through Canon Andrew White, vicar of St. George’s Baghdad, enabling the members at the church to provide food, and where necessary blankets and medicine, to hundreds of people displaced or impoverished throughout the city.

Hundreds pack Jerusalem Cathedral for Bishop's Enthronement

Bethlehem welcomes Church Leaders' visit

On 15 June 2005 the elections for the new Coadjutor Bishop of the Anglican Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem and the Middle East were held in Amman, Jordan. At the end of the second round, the Rev. Canon Suheil Dawani was elected as the new Bishop. He will work alongside the current Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Bishop Riah Abu-Assal, for a period of two years.

Brothers and Sisters...Christ is risen! Let us rejoice. Let us achieve, with the grace of God, our own resurrection, spiritual and social. As we gaze on the Cross of Christ, we need to ask ourselves some penetrating questions if we would claim to be true disciples. In the first instance we must ask if we are ready to repudiate self-interest as the chief motive of our lives, so that we can readily accept the burdens of life which others lay on us.
